"Larry is not as involved in the process as a lot of people like to think he is," coach Ken Whisenhunt said, smiling. "Certainly, I think that Larry likes him, that Larry takes him under his wing and it will be important to Larry that this young man does well."
--Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly disciplined Floyd a year after a DUI arrest. Floyd wasn't allowed to participate in spring ball, although he could do individual drills. Floyd was reinstated in early August. Kelly said Floyd learned his lesson and has always been a hard worker.
He's the kind of kid, Kelly said, who will dive to make a catch in a Tuesday practice late in the season.
"Just competing when nobody was watching," Kelly said. "All the great ones I've ever coached have had that. He's going to compete every time he's out there. They are going to have to tell him when to tone it down. That's a pretty good thing."
--The Cardinals had chances to trade into the second round, but the price was too high, Whisenhunt said.
"We talked about it, but when we looked at it what it was going to cost us, it wasn't worth what we were trying to move up to get. That's the bottom line. We would have to give up multiple picks and that's something that you have to weigh vs. the players that you are looking at. At that point, the value just wasn't there."
--Draft picks this year are expected to make about the same as last season. The 2012 salary cap of $120.6 million per team is roughly the same as last year.
In 2011, Detroit took defensive tackle Nick Fairley with the 13th overall pick. He signed a four-year deal worth about $9.9. million, including a $5.7 million signing bonus. That is likely to be Floyd's salary range.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I'm one of the best, I think, in my mind. I take special teams serious. When I was starting at corner, I was the leading tackler on special teams. I got a highlight reel just of special teams, throwing guys out of bounds and everything. I think that's one of the main reasons, too, why Arizona likes me, because I'm a hard worker and I'll do anything." -- Cornerback Jamell Fleming, the team's third-round selection.
