NFL, NFLPA to meet over value of Saints QB Drew Brees' franchise tag

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, embroilied in a contract dispute with the team, will be the subject of a hearing between the NFL and NFLPA on Wednesday regarding the relative value of his 2013 franchise tag.

The meeting has the potential to result in a bigger payday for Brees, who was franchised previously in his career.

The NFL maintains that if Brees, set to make $16.4M this season on the franchise tender but who has yet to sign it, would be in line for a 120 percent raise in 2013 if he was franchised again, as the CBA stipulates for players franchised in consecutive years.

The NFLPA, pointing to Brees being franchised when he was a Charger, contends that if he were to be franchised by the Saints again in 2013, then as a third-time franchised player he would be due 140 percent of his 2012 salary.

Before joining CBS Sports, Jason La Canfora was the Washington Redskins beat writer for The Washington Post for six years and served as NFL Network's insider. The Baltimore native can be seen every Sunday during the season on The NFL Today.
