Rivera disappointed in first preseason game

--Panthers coach Ron Rivera doesn't put too much stock in preseason results, but there were things that troubled him deeply about the 26-13 loss to Houston.

"I'm just disappointed because I expected us to come out and play a little bit better than we did," he said. "The nice thing about it is that it is a preseason game. We will learn from this and we will get better."

The starters played Houston relatively evenly, and it was tied at 13 at halftime, but the Texans took it from there.

"The game got away from us a little bit in the second half," Rivera said. "There are some younger guys that I expected to show up and do some things that didn't."

Rivera called his players up to yell at them in practice last week, and it's clear the last week of training camp will be an intense one.

--Defensive end Thomas Keiser might not be a lock to make the roster, but he's clearly the greenest player on it. Keiser's been walking around training camp with a jug of water mixed with Chia seeds.

"People ask me all the time if it's the same stuff that's in Chia Pets. It is," Keiser said. "I'll have probably two or three tablespoons and somewhere between two-thirds and a full gallon of water every day.

"It helps hydrate you, because it absorbs 10 times its weight in water. And instead of the water just going in your system and flushing right out, it's going to sit in you longer. Most of the guys think I'm pretty weird for carrying that around."

"Joe Adams is dynamic. Hold onto your britches, because there is no telling what is going to happen with him." -- Coach Ron Rivera, on rookie punt returner Joe Adams, who had a sideline-to-sideline 34-yard return that looked like a play on a video game.
