The Lions started the game with four new starters in the secondary and then lost one of those to a concussion in the third quarter. Rookie cornerback Bill Bentley was knocked out of the game in the third quarter. He was evaluated for a concussion and was kept out of the game. The Lions, already without starting safety Louis Delmas (knee) and cornerback Chris Houston (ankle), started Bentley and Jacob Lacey at cornerback, with Erik Coleman and John Wendling at safety. Veteran Drayton Florence played nickel. When Bentley went out, they used rookie Jonte Green, who was promptly beat on a 23-yard touchdown. It is unknown if either Delmas or Houston will play next week.
Once again, all the talk about the Lions seeking a better balance between pass and run on offense was just noise. The Lions pass - that's how they are built and that's how they will play. Kevin Smith did what they need a back to do - he gained 62 yards on 13 carries, a 4.8-yard average and only one negative yardage play. He also scored twice. The Lions effectively mixed in reverses with Nate Burleson and Titus Young. But, at the end of the day, 49 pass plays were called and they ran the ball 18 times.
