After two games, the Bengals defense is off to one of their worst starts in 30 years. It is also one of the worst starts a Mike Zimmer-led unit has had.
"It's not good."We're not very good right now. There's lots of things we're not doing good right now," Zimmer said.""Every aspect of it surprises me."
After giving up 439 yards to Cleveland the previous Sunday, the Bengals have allowed their first two opponents to gain over 400 yards, which is the first time that has happened since 1991 and only the second time since 1981.
That is the first time that has happened in Zimmer's 13 seasons as a defensive coordinator, first with Dallas (2000-06) and then with Atlanta (2007) and Cincinnati (2008-present). The 71 points allowed are the second most, with the 2000 Dallas squad giving up 73 in its first two games.
Of the 120 defensive plays, there have been 37 where they have given up 10 yards or more.
When asked if he could point to one thing that has had the Bengals get off to a bad start defensively, Zimmer said it was a variety that has them off to one of their worst starts in 21 years.
"It's everything. Technique, discipline, effort, responsibilities, everything. It's a big problem," Zimmer said.""We don't pass rush, pass cover, stop the run, stop the pass. We don't tackle and play with enough effort."
After Jeromy Miles replaced Taylor Mays at strong safety in the Browns game, Zimmer has hinted at more changes coming up for Sunday's game at Washington. A possibility could be Rey Maualuga being replaced at middle linebacker after he has struggled mightily the past two weeks.
