COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Former NFL running back Stephen Davis has been arrested after officials say he was operating a nightclub even though its business license had been revoked.

Davis played 11 seasons for Washington, Carolina and St. Louis. He was arrested Wednesday. Lexington County Sheriff Department spokesman Major John Allard says Davis is still in jail.

Davis was also charged with three counts involving fraudulent checks.

The state agency says Davis' license to operate the PURE Lounge in Columbia was revoked in July. The agency says the club continued operating despite losing its license.

The 38-year-old Davis could face up to 30 days in prison and $200 in fines if convicted. He lives in Irmo, a suburb near Columbia. Neither the agency nor the sheriff's spokesman knew if Davis had an attorney.
