Power Rankings: Hey, my predictions in September weren't all wrong

  •

The final CBSSports.com Power Rankings made me feel like the idiot many of you out there think I am when it comes to making predictions.

It's the time when I look back to the first set of rankings that I did the week before the season to see how I did.

Let me first say, I can handle the venom. That means you, Redskins fans. Yes, I picked your team to go 3-13 and have a rough time on offense. I was wrong. I will be wrong again.

The Redskins opened the season at No. 26 in the rankings, and made the playoffs. Oops. It gets worse.

The Colts were 29th, and made the playoffs. The Vikings were 30th, and made the playoffs. You can throw in Seattle for good measure. I had them at No. 20, and they finished in the top 10.

That doesn't mean all of it was bad.

Of the teams that opened in the top 10 before the season, six made the playoffs. The biggest whiff was the Eagles in the sixth spot. What was I thinking? The other teams in the top 10 from the first week that failed to make the playoffs were the Giants (No. 2), Steelers (No. 8) and Saints (No. 9).

I think I deserve some credit for having the Bengals at No. 7 when the season began. I also had the Chiefs, Jets and Panthers down low when many thought those would be playoff teams.

That's what makes the NFL great, the unpredictability of it all -- and the venom making predictions brings.

I can't tell you how many times in the past two months the Redskins fans have ripped my hairline, my height, my gut, questioned how I have a job, wonder if I am related to the boss and even wonder if I can even see.

Only add a few nasty words to it and you know what it has been like. But you know what I say to that:

Only six more months until I play out the season week-by-week again like I did last year.

I bet you can hardly wait.
