On Sunday, as we watched all the action at CBSSports.com, I took a lot of crap from some of the guys for putting the Kansas City Chiefs in the top spot of the Power Rankings.
I defended it by saying they are the only undefeated team.
"So they're the best team in the league?" I was asked.
"No way," I said. "But they've earned that spot."
At 8-0, they have to stay there. But I will say again what I said on Twitter Sunday: They might be the worst 8-0 team I've seen.
Yes, the defense is good. Yes, they take the ball away. But that doesn't win titles. I don't care if they've held every opponent to 17 points or less. It's an offensive league. When the Denver Broncos got down 21-7 to the Washington Redskins Sunday, you knew they could come back. If the Chiefs get down 14, they are done.
Their offense is too limited. Kansas City is 16th in total offense, but 25th in yards per play. The Chiefs are 26th in passing and 23rd in sacks per pass play allowed and 18th in third-down efficiency.
Those numbers aren't winning a title.
The defense is the top-scoring unit in the league and the Chiefs lead the NFL with a plus-12 takeaway/giveaway ratio. Those are truly impressive numbers, but in the end those aren't the type of things that cover up the liability that is their offense.
So enjoy the 8-0, Chiefs fans, and enjoy your time at the top of the league. The Chiefs have won them all, even if they haven't beaten a team with a winning record.
That's why they are the top team in the rankings.
But don't get fooled. I don’t think they will be staying there.
