SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers retired the jersey of Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott on Monday night, recognizing one of football's most feared hitters.

Lott's No. 42 uniform was mounted in a frame for a ceremony at halftime of San Francisco's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It was more emotional than Lott expected.

"It felt like my legs had left me," he said. "It's like the air was sucked out of me, and I think the reason why is I wish I had eight hours to thank everybody, then they tell you you've just got two minutes to try to get everything out. And before you know it, it's just a blur."

His jersey will reside in the 49ers' hall of honor alongside those of other Niners greats such as Joe Montana, Dwight Clark and John Brodie.
