CARSON, Calif. -- The San Diego Chargers signed
second-round draft pick Igor Olshansky
on Sunday, and he immediately arrived at training camp for afternoon
practice.
The defensive end from Oregon is expected to compete for a starting
position on the left side of the defensive line. The 35th pick overall
missed two days of training camp before both sides agreed to terms.
"He's a little late, but that's OK. We worked it out and everybody is
happy," general manager A.J. Smith said.
Olshansky's signing leaves Philip Rivers as San Diego's only unsigned
draft pick. The quarterback was drafted fourth overall by the New York
Giants, then traded to San Diego in a deal that sent quarterback Eli
Manning to New York.
Olshansky, a 6-foot-6, 309-pound native of the Ukraine, was a
second-team All-Pac-10 selection before leaving school after his junior
year.
He had 58 tackles and 6.5 sacks last season.
"I'm just going to come out here and play my hardest," Olshansky said.
"I feel I can contribute on the run; that's my biggest asset to the team
is I can play the run."
