Buffalo Bills
Significant additions: Troy Vincent, CB; Chris Villarrial, G; Jason Gildon, LB.
Significant subtractions: Antoine Winfield, CB; Ruben Brown, G; Sam Gash, FB; David Moore, TE; Sammy Morris, RB.
Biggest offseason move: Signing Vincent after losing Winfield to Minnesota. Vincent is a former Pro Bowl star who has at least two solid seasons in him and who will be invaluable to the Bills in the locker room.
Will go to the playoffs if ... Drew Bledsoe figures out how to get rid of the ball.
Won't go to the playoffs if ... Travis Henry and Willis McGahee don't grow up and realize that starting isn't everything.
Rookie to watch: Lee Evans, WR, Wisconsin. Eric Moulds had one TD last year, and it's easy to see why: Opponents didn't fear the Bills' No. 2 receiver and loaded up on Moulds. Evans has the hands, the great leaping ability and the speed to stretch defenses. The cavalry just arrived for Moulds.
Overview: The key here is having Bledsoe play as he did the first half of 2002, not as he has done since then. Buffalo has weapons, lots of them, but they're no good if Bledsoe doesn't improve dramatically from a horrible 2003.
New York Jets
Significant additions: Justin McCareins, WR; Pete Kendall, G; Eric Barton, LB; David Barrett, CB; Reggie Tongue, S; Toby Gowin, P; Quincy Carter, QB.
Significant subtractions: Aaron Beasley, CB; Mo Lewis, LB; Marvin Lewis, LB; Sam Garnes, S; Kevin Swayne, WR; Tyrone Carter, S; Vinny Testaverde, QB; Curtis Conway, WR; Dave Szott, T.
Biggest offseason move: Acquiring wide receiver McCareins from Tennessee. The Jets still haven't overcome the loss of Laveranues Coles, but this will help. McCareins is a perfect No. 2 receiver and gives them another return specialist.
Will go to the playoffs if ... they figure out how to stop the run.
Won't go to the playoffs if ... it's Carter, not Chad Pennington, throwing the ball.
Rookie to watch: Jonathan Vilma, LB, Miami. The first-round pick is pushing Sam Cowart for a starting job and should win it before the season is over. He's a sure tackler and he's fast -- critical for a defense that finally can move to the ball.
Overview: The Jets did a complete makeover of their defense, and it was time. Now, they fly to the ball and make plays they could not a year ago. This club is a sleeper and might surprise if they keep Pennington intact.
Miami Dolphins
Significant additions: A.J. Feeley, QB; David Boston, WR; Damion McIntosh, T; John St. Clair, T; Jeno James, G; Reggie Howard, CB; Chris Atkins, S; Sammy Morris, RB; Terrence Wilkins, WR; John Jones, TE; Antuan Edwards, S; Antonio Freeman, WR; Marty Booker, WR.
Significant subtractions: Ricky Williams, RB; Adewale Ogunleye, DE; Jamar Fletcher, CB; Tim Ruddy, C; Brock Marion, S; Brian Griese, QB; Todd Perry, G; James McKnight, WR; Mark Dixon, T; Todd Wade, T; Davern Williams, DT; Obafemi Ayanbedejo, FB.
Biggest offseason move: That would be the one that took running back Ricky Williams out of town. Williams was responsible for 37.3 percent of their offense and 75.6 percent of their running game. Travis Minor cannot replace that.
Will go to the playoffs if ... they find a lamp with a genie and a Pro Bowl running back inside.
Won't go to the playoffs if ... they move the ball as they did -- or did not -- against Washington in the preseason.
Rookie to watch: Vernon Carey, OL, Miami. This club needs to open holes for Minor and protect Feeley and/or Jay Fiedler. Carey could be a factor, though he recently moved behind RG Taylor Whitley as the team juggles its lineup.
Overview: Poor Dave Wannstedt. He doesn't have a chance with a club that lost its top rusher, a big-time receiver and the AFC's sack leader. Miami should limp to the finish.
