News briefs: Steelers sign Wilson to fill Burress void

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers signed wide receiver Cedrick Wilson to a four-year, $8 million contract Tuesday, a move that appears to signal Plaxico Burress' departure from Pittsburgh.

Wilson will receive a $2 million signing bonus.

Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said Pittsburgh is not done shopping for free agents and didn't rule out bringing back Burress, a former first-round draft pick.

"A lot of strange things can happen in free agency," Colbert said. "We never want to say never."

Burress is scheduled to meet with the New York Giants on Wednesday.

The 5-feet-10 and 183-pound Wilson gives the Steelers a group of receivers similar in size to those on the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

The 26-year-old Wilson played four years with the San Francisco 49ers after being drafted out of Tennessee in the sixth round in 2001.

Wilson started three games for the 49ers in his first three seasons, but started 15 games last season before breaking his left leg. He had career highs in catches (47), yards (641) and touchdowns (three) last season, but the 49ers made no attempt to keep him.

Patriots keep big part of line, sign guard Neal

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots re-signed guard Stephen Neal, keeping one of the key components of their offensive line.

Neal, a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion who saw little playing time in 2002 and 2003 due to injuries, went from project to prospect in 2004. He started the final 14 games of the regular season and all three playoff games for the Super Bowl champions.

The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Neal was part of a line that allowed only 26 sacks and cleared the way for Corey Dillon to set a single-season team record of 1,635 yards rushing.

At Cal State-Bakersfield, Neal had a 156-10 career record and won the Dan Hodge Award in 1999 as the nation's top college wrestler.

Cardinals nab another free agent, safety Griffith

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Safety Robert Griffith agreed to a two-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, their fourth free agent acquisition.

The team signed offensive tackle Oliver Ross (Steelers) on Friday, quarterback Kurt Warner (Giants) on Sunday and defensive end Chike Okeafor (Seahawks) on Monday.

"We're making some major changes this winter and, I mean, who's surprised by that?" coach Dennis Green said. "You think I could stand another year like last year? There's just no way."

Griffith left the Cleveland Browns to rejoin Green, who brought him into the NFL in 1994 with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie out of San Diego State.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Griffith had a strong season with Cleveland, making a career-high 157 tackles, including 93 solos, eight tackles-for-loss, one interception and one sack.

Giants add third free agent, kicker Feely

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Former Atlanta placekicker Jay Feely became the third free agent to join the New York Giants this offseason, signing a two-year contract.

Feely hit 18 of 23 field goal attempts last season with the Falcons, the longest from 47 yards. He was perfect on 40 extra points. Feely, 29, will be the Giants' third placekicker in as many seasons. He will replace 37-year-old Steve Christie. Matt Bryant was the kicker in 2003.

In four seasons with the Falcons, Feely scored 436 points, the third-highest total in franchise history. He made 98-of-127 field goal attempts and 142-of-144 extra points.

He also has 44 touchbacks on 317 career kickoffs, including 13 last season. Christie had two touchbacks last season, and the Giants have had only eight in the last four seasons.

The Giants signed former Washington middle linebacker Antonio Pierce and former Jets offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie last week. They expect receiver Plaxico Burress to visit on Wednesday.

Panthers' Mills, Fields honored

BALTIMORE -- Sam Mills and Mark Fields of the Carolina Panthers share a bond unlike most coaches and players. Both have battled cancer over the past 18 months. Mills has remained on the job as the Carolina linebackers coach while Fields made the Pro Bowl in 2004 at outside linebacker after sitting out the previous year.

They were among several in the NFL honored at the 27th Annual Ed Block Courage Awards. One player from every team is chosen by his teammates for courage and sportsmanship.

Mills was presented the first Johnny Unitas Tops in Courage Award. Doctors discovered he had colon cancer during training camp in 2003, but Mills kept working. He inspired the team during its surprise run to the Super Bowl that season against the New England Patriots.

Veteran wideout Galloway returns to Bucs

TAMPA, Fla. -- Wide receiver Joey Galloway re-signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as the team attempts to keep most of its receiving corps intact.

In his first season with the Buccaneers, Galloway finished with 33 catches for 416 yards and five touchdowns, but missed six games with a groin injury. He made just seven starts in 2004.

The Bucs were hoping to re-sign either Galloway or Joe Jurevicius this offseason, both of whom entered the free agent market. Along with rookie Michael Clayton, those three were the only Bucs receivers to catch at least 25 passes last season.

The speedy Galloway also led the Bucs with 20 punt returns for 142 yards and one touchdown. The Bucs acquired Galloway from the Dallas Cowboys in March of last year in exchange for Keyshawn Johnson.

Galloway is the fifth player to re-sign or restructure their deal with the Bucs this offseason, joining quarterback Brian Griese, fullback Mike Alstott, defensive end Greg Spires and tight end Dave Moore.

Falcons add Gowin, release Mohr

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons signed punter Toby Gowin and released Chris Mohr, who punted for them the past four seasons.

Gowin, an eight-year veteran, punted 80 times with a 38.2 average in 16 games for the New York Jets in 2004. Gowin also has kicked off in his career. He broke into the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys in 1997 through 1999 and has also played for the New Orleans Saints and Jets.

Mohr, a 14-year veteran, had a 40.6 average in 2004.

Atlanta also re-signed backup offensive lineman Steve Herndon.

Jaguars sign cornerback Cousin, re-sign QB Gray

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free agent cornerback Terry Cousin and re-signed third-string quarterback Quinn Gray.

A nine-year veteran, Cousin played all 16 games with the New York Giants last season after signing as a free agent fr9om Carolina in March. He also started five games at safety and tallied 33 tackles and one interception last season before being released last month.

Gray didn't see any action behind Byron Leftwich and David Garrard last season. He will compete with Nate Hybl for the third-team position this season.
