EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) The New York Giants are seeking to block a $1.3 billion makeover of the Meadowlands sports complex, home to their state-owned stadium.
A lawsuit filed by the team will also seek to force the complex's operator, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, "to honor its contractual obligations to the Giants," the team said.
The announcement by the Giants came nearly a month after the sports authority took the Giants to court after efforts by the team to close a deal to build a new $750 million stadium stalled. A key issue for the Giants in the dispute is over parking at the complex, which the team claims would hinder its fans on game days.
Sports authority spokesman Jim DeBosh said officials had not yet seen the lawsuit and had no immediate response.
Construction work began March 28 at Xanadu, which is to include sports-themed theaters, bars, restaurants and shopping outlets. It is to be built around the Continental Airlines Arena in the 400-acre Meadowlands complex.
During stadium negotiations, the Giants sought to have Xanadu closed on game days to avoid parking and traffic problems.
