QB controversy? Bring it on, Cardinals coach says
"I never have any hard and fast rules like that," Green said. "What I believe in is that the team deserves for me to make the decision on who the best guy is to help us win."
McCown said that, while he obviously wants to be a starter, he still considers himself Warner's backup.
"I told Kurt I'm rooting for him, hoping he gets back and gets healthy," McCown said. "My goal is to give him an opportunity to make a run at the playoffs when he gets back. I need to hand him a team that's 2-3 or 3-3 or whatever it, and let him have a shot at it."
McCown was 6-7 as a starter last season and believes he is greatly improved.
"Just having played with Kurt and learned so much from him, and just the experience factor of another year," he said. "You grow by leaps and bounds every year you're in this league. There are definitely things I look at on the tape throwing-wise that I did (Sunday) that maybe I wouldn't have done last year, and that I was pleased with."
McCown is a free agent after this season, so if Green doesn't make him a starter, maybe someone else will.
"I just want to win games for our team," McCown said. "That's all I can worry about right now. At the end of the day, if what I do merits being a starter, then so be it, and obviously I'd be glad because I love the game and I like playing."
