Smooth Tomlinson rises to top of running backs field

Notebook | Mailbag

Lorenzo Neal has the worst view in the house to watch greatness.

That's because it always happens behind him.

As the lead blocker for San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, Neal has to wait until Mondays during film study to watch the dynamic runs of the man he helps spring loose. On most running plays, his nose is buried inside a linebacker's stomach, which doesn't leave much chance to watch.

"So on Mondays I'll just sit in there and be amazed at the things he does," Neal said.

Aren't we all?

Tomlinson is clearly the best running back in the NFL. And some might say he's the best player, regardless of position. That position is gaining steam this season, with opponents, teammates and media members now stating the case as Tomlinson being the best player in the game.

"I think he is," Neal said.

So is he?

The feeling here is that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady are the two best players in the game. Of course, there's always a partial lean to the quarterback position.

Tomlinson is next after those two, moving past Priest Holmes and the rest to take over as the game's best back. Tomlinson, as is his nature, is humble when asked if he is the best player.

That's him. All of his teammates rave about his character, saying he is a better person than player, which makes it easy to understand why he isn't one of those look-at-me types. Dance? Not really. Talk smack? Nope.

He just plays.
