Mailbag: Getting lucky in Philly?

Posted Oct. 27

The Philadelphia Eagles fans came at me hard this week.

It seems they were upset by the inference in my column last Sunday that the Eagles got a little lucky in beating the San Diego Chargers.

Any Eagles fan who didn't think there was some luck involved is way off base. Consider this: That was the first time in franchise history that they blocked another team's field goal and returned it for a touchdown -- which also happened to be the game-winning points.

Yes, the Eagles played a great game on defense.

Yes, they forced San Diego to change what they like to do.

Yes, the Eagles are a good football team.

But they were lucky some, too.

Deal with it, Eagles fans. Every team needs some along the way.

From: Akakrules

How did the Eagles steal one? Their D was awesome. It takes skill, not luck, to block a field goal and return it for a touchdown. It's so obvious you have a bias against this team.

Akakirules: I have nothing against the Eagles. In fact, if they're good it's good for me. Why? I love going to games in Philly. The fans are great, the stadium's wonderful and I love hanging out in that Market Street area the night before. Plus, they have a great public relations staff that makes my job so easy when I go there.

From: Tom

I guess they were lucky to stop LT cold all day! Lucky to study film and find a flaw in the San Diego kicking game? Lucky that McNabb is playing hurt and nowhere near 100-percent? Lucky? Stupid article that you were lucky I read.

Tom: You're an angry man. You might need to get lucky. You know what I mean.

From: Todd

This is still the best read on the web! I'm still not sold on the Colts though. I guess they are the obvious No. 1 being the only undefeated team. Are they really that good? Are you ready to fit them for rings? Not me. Id love to see them play a healthy Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, New England, San Diego, Dallas, Denver, or even a beaten up Philadelphia -- just to see how good they really are.

Todd: Are they ready for rings? Not yet. But they are definitely the best team in the league. Thanks for the nice words, but you're in the minority saying good things about me. Look at the next letter.

From: Steve

You are an idiot.

Steve: Now that's more like it. That's what I've come to expect.

From: Loran

It would be nice if you paid attention to who the players are. Seattle's kicker is not Kris Brown. It is Josh Brown. How can I take anything you say seriously if you don't know the names of the players involved?

Loran: I had a brain fart, but then I realized it and fixed it. In the short time that Josh Brown's name was incorrect, I had 62,000 e-mails pointing it out. At least I know the Seahawks fans are reading.
