Panthers lead Eagles 21-17 early in the fourth quarter

PHILADEPHIA (AP) -Jake Delhomme threw three touchdown passes, including a 35-yard toss to rookie DeAngelo Williams, and the Carolina Panthers had a 21-17 lead over the Philadelphia Eagles early in the fourth quarter on Monday night.

After Jeff Garcia's 30-yard TD pass to Donte' Stallworth tied it at 14, the Panthers answered quickly.

On second-and-15 from the Eagles 35, Delhomme was under pressure when he lobbed a short pass to Williams near the left side. Williams, with an convoy of blockers, broke at least one tackle and ran between several defenders to reach the end zone.

Garcia drove the Eagles to the Panthers 10 on the next drive, but they settled for a 28-yard field goal from David Akers.

Delhomme's 1-yard TD pass to Keyshawn Johnson with 4 seconds left in the second quarter gave Carolina a 14-7 lead.

On Philadelphia's first possession in the third quarter, Garcia was chased from the pocket by Mike Rucker and threw a strike on the run to an open Stallworth, who caught it near the 5 and ran in.

Garcia, starting his second game for the injured Donovan McNabb, tossed an 8-yard TD pass to Brian Westbrook to tie the game at 7 with 2:12 left in the first half.

But, after both teams punted, the Panthers drove 78 yards in 50 seconds. Delhomme's 38-yard pass to Steve Smith on third-and-8 to the Eagles 17 preceded a pass-interference penalty against Sheldon Brown on Smith in the end zone.

That gave Carolina, which had no timeouts remaining, one more play from the 1 with 7 seconds to go. Delhomme connected with Johnson on a fade pass over backup safety Quintin Mikell to give the Panthers a lead.

Delhomme threw a 9-yard TD pass to Smith in the first quarter to make it 7-0.

The Eagles went three-and-out on their first two possessions, but Garcia got the offense going in the second quarter and Stallworth made an outstanding 51-yard, one-armed catch to set up their first score.

Garcia had 228 yards passing through three quarters in his second start since replacing McNabb, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in a loss to Tennessee on Nov. 19.

The Panthers were without running back DeShaun Foster (elbow) for the second straight game. Williams took Foster's spot in the lineup. He had just 34 yards on 13 carries, but his 41-yard catch-and-run to the Eagles 12 set up Carolina's first score. On third-and-7 from the 9, Delhomme connected with Smith on a slant pass to give the Panthers a lead.

After Stallworth's long gain put the ball at Carolina's 19, Garcia threw two more incomplete passes before completing an 11-yard pass to Reggie Brown on third-and-10. He found Westbrook over the middle on the next play to tie it at 7.

Despite losing five of their previous six games, the Eagles (5-6) were in position to move into a tie for a playoff spot in the mediocre NFC with a win over Carolina (6-5).

Panthers fullback Brad Hoover went out with a strained neck and cornerback Ken Lucas left with a thigh injury. Eagles safety Michael Lewis left with a broken nose on the final drive of the second quarter and special teams specialist Jason Short went down with a knee injury.
