Will Andrew Luck pass for 4,000 yards in 2012?

Andrew Luck: 4,000 yards. Over or under?

If the Colts wanted to throw it and throw and throw it, he'd get there. But coach Chuck Pagano is a big believer in running the football. He wants to control the clock and take pressure off an offensive line that isn't great in pass protection. The only caveat is that the Colts could be behind in games because the defense has concerns. Even so, I say he falls short.

The Colts will be behind in a lot of games, too, and they don't really have a bona fide running game. So Luck will be asked to throw ... and throw ... and throw, and I haven't seen a rookie quarterback this prepared in years.

Robert Griffin III won't do it, and neither will Andrew Luck. He will hand off. Hand off. Hand off some more.

Chuck Pagano is building a team in his image. Much bigger and tougher on defense with a clock-control style of play on offense ... at least until Luck becomes the player everyone believes he will be. It's a process and this team has holes. I believe they will be careful with him this rookie season and try to be as balanced as possible.

Luck has a better chance to throw for 4,000 yards than RG3, but staying upright for the whole season is his challenge. The Colts will play from behind more than Washington and that means Luck averages 30-plus throws a game -- but averaging 250 yards a game for 16 weeks is a challenge because of his offensive line.

No one's doing what Cam did last season. Andy Dalton had a great rookie season and threw for 3,400 yards.

Like Griffin in Washington, it will take Luck some time to adjust, but here's why Luck will match Newton from last year (and maybe will exceed him). He's got better receivers than Griffin and inferior running backs. His tight end from Stanford, Coby Fleener, will be a starter, and the chemistry between those two will be on display. The Colts offensive line will be more porous than the Redskins, but Luck's good enough to overcome it.

If the Colts are going to win it's going to be because of Luck's ability to put points on the board. He comes from a pro-style offense at Stanford and his football IQ is off the charts. Since we're comparing Luck to Peyton Manning in every other facet of their professional lives, we might as well throw this out there: Manning had 3,739 passing yards as a rookie.
