Will Adrian Peterson rush for 1,300 yards in 2012?

Adrian Peterson: 1,300 rushing yards. Over or under?

A month ago, I would have said under. But this is a special player who is already back playing football. That's impressive. Nine months after surgery to repair an ACL he is playing again. I don't know if he will be the same player, but he will certainly be good enough to get to 1,300 yards. That's only 81 yards a game if he plays all 16. Yes, he can do that.

I'd feel better about this if he weren't coming off a serious knee injury. But he is. And so I don't completely trust Peterson or the Vikings. He's been hurt too much for me to think he cracks 1,300.

My belief is that the Vikings will break Peterson in very slowly early in the year. In fact, I'm certain of this. Maybe the first two or three games. Then they'll turn him loose. But it will be too late for him to reach 1,300 yards. Next season: he might hit 2,000.

The year back from this injury is no joke and by midseason the year could be lost for the Vikings, so why push too hard with the superstar coming back from major surgery? There is only so much tread on any RBs tires. Being pragmatic makes sense and I don't see that kind of production this year.

Peterson needs to quell his attempt to play early in the season. His knee surgery needs more time to heal than he or the club thinks. Beyond that, Christian Ponder doesn't scare opponents yet and that means teams will overplay the Vikings' run game.

I can't believe Minnesota would be irresponsible enough to give AP more than 250 carries in 2012, which means he'd need to average 5.2 yards per carry to top that number, so I'm going just under.

It will take a year before we see Adrian Peterson return to health after his devastating knee injury from last December. Obviously, there's a big dropoff between Peterson and his backup, Toby Gerhart, but Peterson simply won't be as effective this year as we've seen in the past. In 2013, I'd go over. For now, I say no.

Even if AP is physically capable of playing in Week 1 it'll take longer than that to clear the mental hurdles that come with returning from a serious knee injury.
