Will Jason Pierre-Paul make 17 sacks in 2012?

Jason Pierre-Paul: 17 sacks. Over or under?

He will push the sack record this year. I think he's a special player. I loved him coming out of school and he's only scratched the surface. He was out of shape last year, and got 16 1/2 sacks on raw athletic ability. He has a chance to be the best pass rusher in the league.

He was a surprise and a bit of a mystery to opponents last season. Not anymore. Some of those sacks he produced will go to Osi Umenyiora off the bench or a healthy Justin Tuck.

Almost a push but I'm going just a tad under simply because while Pierre-Paul is the next great pass rusher in the NFL he is going to see an unbelievable amount of attention and resources directed his way. This will slow him some and keep him from reaching 17 but he 16 is still pretty damn good.

He is just coming into his own, he is flanked by elite talent and in a scheme devised to get him to the quarterback. This guy has the ability to challenge the single-season sack mark at some point and, given how pass heavy this league has become, the opportunities to cut loose will be great.

As I see how Eli Manning moves this offense, it is possible that opposing offenses will be in catch up mode. And that means JPP can tee off as a pass rusher. Jared Allen told me 25 sacks were possible this season and that makes 17 by JPP an easy target.

This isn't to rip on JPP, who could certainly improve on his 16.5 sack number from 2011. I just think the Giants will have a healthier, more successful pass rush rotation and he won't see as many snaps. This one should be close.

In just the second season of his career, Pierre-Paul recorded 16.5 sacks. And he keeps getting better (when he's not dunking teammates in the ice tub). After this season, he'll join players like DeMarcus Ware and Jared Allen as one of the elite pass-rushers in the NFL. Correction; he's already there.

JPP is the not only the most athletic defensive end in the NFL, he's also one of the league's most athletic players. Still, 17 sacks is a tall order. If he needs motivation maybe he should pretend the quarterback is Prince Amukamara.
