Will Cam Newton throw 27 touchdown passes in 2012?

Cam Newton: 27 TD passes. Over or under?

Newton ran for 14 touchdowns last season and threw for 21. I say he gets the first number down and increases the second by 10. That means he gets to 31. That would be a special second season. Newton knows the offense better, which means he should be able to get deeper into his reads before running. Up goes the TD pass total.

I always had a feeling he might regress this season, and let's see how that plays out. If not, I still don't see him eclipsing 27 TDs, primarily because he's as dangerous running as he is throwing.

You're going to see Newton take a large portion of those running scores and transfer them to passing ones. His abilities will only get better in the pocket.

He is not nearly as raw as he was a year ago and had a full offseason. Plays he lacked the experience to make a year ago, situations where he may have struggled, he has learned from. I don't think 30-plus TDs is out of the question at all, and if the running game is improved over 2011 -- I believe it will be -- then look out. He already has incredible deep chemistry with Steve Smith.

Cam is capable of 27, but I think his sophomore season will be tough. Last year, Cam only threw 10 touchdowns in his final eight games and will encounter struggles that often happen in a second season. Newton is a superstar, but a 25 touchdown season will be hard to get even if he's healthy enough to play all 16 games.

That's too big of a jump for my tastes. Total TDs he'll get it easy but the Panthers will have a better defense and run the ball more this year, similar to the Packers scenario.

One of the most amazing aspects of Newton's rookie season -- the best ever by a first-year quarterback -- was the lack of preparation. Despite all the criticism he faced before the draft (and even criticism from 49ers quarterback Alex Smith after the season), Newton proved he's the future of the game. But the Panthers running game is too strong and Newton will score too many rushing touchdowns himself for him to reach 27. He threw 21 touchdown passes last year and ran for 14 more. That sounds about right.

Newton was one of the most exciting players in 2012, but he won't be sneaking up on anybody this season. This doesn't mean he'll regress; we fully expect him to play well, and the Panthers to improve.
