03/21/17WRDamiere ByrdKnee - MeniscusQUESTIONABLEByrd is undergoing knee surgery that will sideline him until training camp, Max Henson of the team's official site reports.

Byrd only played in one game for the the Panthers last season, recording one reception for 16 yards. While conditioning on his own this offseason, the 24-year-old injured his left knee. "We saw him for treatment, but he continued to experience pain and swelling," head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said. "An MRI revealed he has torn lateral meniscus in his left knee, and Dr. Connor will perform a scope on his left knee. We will modify our conditioning program, and he's projected to be ready to go later in the offseason." Look for more updates on the wideout's status to come as training camp nears.

03/21/17DLCharles JohnsonBackQUESTIONABLEJohnson (back) is undergoing surgery that will keep him out of action until training camp, Max Henson of the team's official site reports.

The 30-year-old, who recently signed a two-year extension, has been been dealing with back pain and will undergo a minor surgery to address the issue. "Following the surgery, we want Charles as active as possible while still taking the proper precautions," head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said. "He will be up and moving around the next day, and we will progressively bring him back." Johnson recorded 26 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles and two pass deflections through 13 games last season and shows no signs of slowing down. Look for more updates on his status to come once training camp is underway.

03/21/17QBCam NewtonShoulderQUESTIONABLENewton is slated to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder on March 30, Max Hanson of the Panthers' official site reports.

Newton suffered a partial tear of his right rotator cuff in Week 14 of last season, after which his practice participation alternated between limited and full in preparation for the final three games. While he didn't miss an offensive snap down the stretch, he statistically posted the worst campaign of his six-year career, completing a miserable 53 percent of his throws for 3,509 yards with a 19:14 TD:INT ratio, while failing to reach 500 yards on the ground (359 yards, to be exact) for the first time. After the season, the Panthers placed a specific rehab schedule upon him. "We developed a plan for Cam to take a period of rest, a period of rehabilitation and treatment, and then start a gradual throwing program the first part of March," head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said. "Cam started his program, and the early parts of his rehab had been going well. However, as we worked to advance him into the next stage -- the strengthening stage, the throwing stage -- he started to have an increase in his pain level and started having pain while throwing. As a result, Dr. Pat Connor [head team physician] felt the most prudent procedure would be to arthroscopically repair the shoulder." Newton is expected to require 12 weeks before commencing "an early throwing program" and 16 weeks before throwing in a team setting. With attendance during the offseason program ruled out, he'll aim to be ready by the start of training camp in late July.

02/23/17RBDevon JohnsonBackQUESTIONABLEJohnson was placed on the Panthers waived/injured list Thursday, The Washington Post reports.

Johnson, un undrafted rookie who played tight end at Marshall, profiles more as a fullback than running back in the NFL. However, the Panthers were already set at that position with incumbent starting FB Mike Tolbert. However, Johnson's injury remains undisclosed, but his release cleared room for the addition of OT Willie Smith.

He'll be hoping to finally catch on with the Panthers as a depth lineman and special teams player in 2017.

01/25/17WRLaRon ByrdConcussionQUESTIONABLEByrd (concussion) was placed on the Panthers' injured reserve list on Tuesday.

Byrd suffered a head injury during Carolina's second game of the preseason. He enjoyed a solid training camp up until that point, though, and will likely take aim at cracking the Panthers' roster once again in 2017.

01/25/17DLRyan DelaireKneeQUESTIONABLEDelaire (knee) has been placed on injured reserve, David Newton of ESPN reports.

Delaire appeared in only six games for Carolina this season, as he missed a chunk of time while on IR from Week 4 to Week 12. The Panthers signed Larry Webster from the practice squad to fill Delaire's roster spot for Sunday's season finale against Tampa Bay.

01/25/17DBDean MarloweHamstringQUESTIONABLEMarlowe (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Marlowe ends his 2016-17 campaign after only 16 snaps in his season debut against the 49ers on Sunday. The undrafted safety suffered a hamstring injury early in the preseason and finally appeared healthy enough to play on Sunday. Unfortunately he aggregated the injury early in the game, leaving the Panthers no choice but to pull the plug on the 24-year-old's season. Marlowe's injury creates a hole in Carolina's special teams unit and leaves Kurt Coleman as the only strong safety on the active roster.

01/14/17KGraham GanoFootQUESTIONABLEGano's (foot) rehab from offseason surgery appears to be going well after he posted a video of himself running on a treadmill in normal fashion, Anthony Rizzuti of PanthersWire.com reports.

Gano underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in the heel of his left foot back in January, and although he was always expected to return to full health by training camp, the video he recently posted evidenced he's moving well following that operation. After posting his lowest field-goal conversion percentage since 2011 last season, Gano will aim for improvement in the final year of his contract in the upcoming campaign.
