02/25/17RBWill JohnsonNeckQUESTIONABLEJohnson (neck) is expected to be released but could return to the team on a veteran's minimum deal, NJ.com's Dan Duggan reports.

Duggan notes that the Giants' signing of Rhett Ellison when free agency opened Thursday signaled that Johnson would likely be released after playing out one year of a two-year, $2.3 million contract. That said, it does appear that a return on a minimum contract could be in the cards for Johnson. The 28-year-old hybrid back had six total touches for 23 yards and a touchdown last season.

01/27/17WRBen EdwardsKnee - ACLQUESTIONABLEEdwards (knee - ACL) spent the 2016 season on injured reserve, ESPN reports.

Edwards suffered a torn ACL in May and reverted to injured reserve after clearing waivers. He'll hit the open market in the offseason but will likely need to show teams he's fully recovered in order to land another contract.

01/26/17TEMatt LaCosseKneeQUESTIONABLELacosse (knee) resigned with the Giants on Tuesday, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports.

Lacosse missed the entirety of last season with a torn ACL and only played in two games during his 2015 rookie season, so he has much to prove before becoming a factor in the Giants offense.

01/26/17QBRyan NassibElbowQUESTIONABLENassib (elbow) may not have a future in New York, Syracuse.com reports.

Nassib struggled during the 2016 preseason and then battled an elbow injury for much of the year, ultimately requiring surgery. It was a rough way to enter unrestricted free agency, and the Giants have since re-signed Josh Johnson and agreed to terms with Geno Smith. It thus appears Nassib, a 2013 fourth-round selection, will head elsewhere after attempting only 10 regular-season passes in his four years with the Giants. He may have to settle for a shot to compete for a No. 2 job.

01/26/17LBJ.T. ThomasKneeQUESTIONABLEThomas was placed on injured reserve with torn ligaments in his knee.

Thomas was largely a special teams player, so his absence won't have an impact on the defense.

01/26/17DBDarian ThompsonFootQUESTIONABLEThompson (foot) is "very close" to making a full recovery, 247 Sports reports.

Thompson, the Giants' 2016 third-round pick out of Boise State, played in just two games his rookie year before going down with a season-ending left foot sprain. With the start of offseason workouts less than a month away, it's great news for the Giants that he's nearing full form. Thompson had earned the starting gig at free safety out of training camp last summer and should enter the 2017 campaign in the same role if he can stay healthy.

01/26/17DBMykkele ThompsonKneeQUESTIONABLEThompson (knee) was placed on injured reserved on Tuesday.

Thompson was placed on IR after suffering an undisclosed knee injury in Sunday's win over the Saints. Thompson could be brought back after he spends six weeks on the IR, but it doesn't seem likely the Giants will use their only designated return on the rookie. The 23-year-old ends his season with one tackle as he mostly served as a reserve safety.

01/26/17LBUani' UngaUndisclosedQUESTIONABLE'Unga (undisclosed) was waived with an injury designation Wednesday, NJ.com reports.

'Unga, a one-time starter for the Giants back in 2015, spent the entire season on injured reserve with an unknown injury. He'll need to get healthy in order to land another contract.

01/26/17RBShane VereenTricepsQUESTIONABLEVereen (triceps) agreed to reduce his 2017 base salary from $3.15 million to $2.15 million, NJ.com reports.

With Vereen coming off a season-ending triceps tear while entering the final year of his contract, there was some question if the Giants intended to keep him around. The question was answered when the team paid him a $500,000 roster bonus March 13 -- likely doing so with the understanding that Vereen would eventually accept a reduction in his base salary. The Giants did recently sign Shaun Draughn, who has done his best work on passing downs in recent years. Draughn is probably an insurance policy more so than legitimate competition, but it's something to keep an eye on in training camp. Paul Perkins currently slots in as the lead back, with Vereen likely handling most of the work on obvious passing downs, assuming his triceps heals as expected. The Giants could still add another running back during the upcoming draft, but such a move would probably be more of a concern for Perkins than for Vereen.

01/09/17DLOwa OdighizuwaHamstringQUESTIONABLEOdighizuwa (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's wild-card game against the Packers.

Odighizuwa's absence won't have too big of an impact on the Giants' defense, with Olivier Vernon and Kerry Wynn starting at defensive end.

01/09/17DLJason Pierre-PaulGroinQUESTIONABLEPierre-Paul (groin) re-signed Friday with the Giants on a four-year contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pierre-Paul's new contract is expected to pay around $17 million annually, and includes $54 million guaranteed. The Giants had previously slapped the franchise tag on the defensive end in February, but the team was committed to negotiating a longer-term deal with Pierre-Paul after he turned in a stellar bounce-back campaign in 2016 after he missed half of the 2015 season while recovering from a fireworks accident. He notched seven sacks in 12 games to lead the team before suffering a season-ending groin injury in Week 13. It's expected that Pierre-Paul will be back to full strength by the start of training camp, and at just 28 years old, he should have at least a couple years of elite-level production left in him.

01/08/17DBDominique Rodgers-CromartieThighQUESTIONABLERodgers-Cromartie (thigh) is questionable to return to Sunday's wild-card playoff game against the Packers.

Rodgers-Cromartie went down on the second play from scrimmage. Trevin Wade will see additional playing time unless he returns.

09/20/16TERyan MalleckNeckQUESTIONABLEMalleck signed a contract with the Steelers on Wednesday, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Malleck spent training camp with the Giants in 2016 before suffering a neck injury and being released just prior to the start of the regular season. He'll have an opportunity to compete for a depth role as a tight end and a special teams player in Pittsburgh in 2017.

09/19/16RBNikita WhitlockSuspensionSUSPENDWhitlock (foot) has been suspended 10 games for a violation of the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances.

Currently on injured reserve due to a mid-foot sprain, the fullback will serve the suspension whenever he receives a clean bill of health.
