Bell's (groin) negotiations over a long-term contract could come down to next week's league deadline of 4:00 ET on July 17, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Bell is currently set to play the upcoming campaign under the Steelers' franchise tag, which would earn him $12.12 million in guaranteed money. Given his massive production since entering the league four years ago, Pittsburgh is rightfully keen to secure Bell's services for the foreseeable future, but the team also needs to weigh any investment against Bell's injury risk. The 25-year-old has already dealt with a couple of knee injuries and failed to finish last year's playoff run due to a groin problem. Despite the latter ailment requiring offseason surgery, Bell seems destined to be ready for Week 1, but it remains to be seen whether he'll have a new deal by then. If he does, Bell will certainly be the NFL's newly appointed highest-paid running back, but if Bell and the organization cannot reach terms by next week's deadline, they'd be forced to revisit the situation next offseason.
Smith-Schuster took some snaps with Ben Roethlisberger and the first-team offense in goal-line situations at minicamp, Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
While he'll have a tough time usurping slot man Eli Rogers for the No. 3 job before Week 1, the 20-year-old rookie could earn an immediate role in three-wide formations near the goal line, where his size arguably would be more valuable than Rogers' quickness. The Steelers have been testing their second-round pick both outside and in the slot, perhaps hoping Smith-Schuster can eventually serve as the top backup at all three receiver spots. Though unlikely to draw enough targets to warrant fantasy consideration early in the season, Smith-Schuster could see his role grow as the season progresses -- possibly even vaulting to relevance sooner than expected if Rogers, Antonio Brown or Martavis Bryant misses time.
Burns was arrested Thursday night in Florida on charges of driving with a suspended license, Adam Beasley of The Miami Herald reports.
Burns was in his home city of Miami when he was pulled over. After he was deemed to be driving with a suspended license, it was discovered Burns had failed to pay over $1,000 in traffic tickets. Now released from jail, Burns' arrest is certainly not good news, but the relatively minor nature of his transgressions probably won't garner much punishment from the Steelers or the league office. Pegged as one of Pittsburgh's starting cornerbacks, the 2016 first-rounder finished with 65 tackles (52 solo), 13 pass defenses and three interceptions as a rookie.
