Cardinals report: Strategy and personnel

The Cardinals have the salary cap space to accommodate the big contracts required by inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, receiver Anquan Boldin and safety Adrian Wilson.

It's questionable, however, if they will decide to pay that much in cold, hard cash over the next few months. The organization's commitment to winning will be tested, and fans are ready to judge.

The club stepped up in the contract with quarterback Kurt Warner, guaranteeing $19 million of the $23 million total.

The Cardinals haven't been a major player in free agency, preferring to sharp for bargains.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

The Cardinals would like re-sign inside linebacker Karlos Dansby and strong safety Adrian Wilson this spring.

Dansby signed his franchise tender this week while Wilson has one year remaining on his deal.

The club is about $1.5 million under the cap, but could create space by releasing running back Edgerrin James ($5 million) and extending the contracts of Wilson and Dansby.

The Cardinals will take another shot at extending the contract of receiver Anquan Boldin. Boldin has backed off his vow never to re-sign with the team, but if a deal is going to be done, he must be willing to take a contract worth an average of around $7 million to $9 million a year. That's less than the $10 million average teammate Larry Fitzgerald is receiving.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Running back: The Cardinals struggled to run for most of the season. Edgerrin James will be released this spring and J.J. Arrington left for Denver. That leaves Tim Hightower as the only back on the roster. If Georgia's Knowshon Moreno or Connecticut's Donald Brown is available at No. 31, the Cardinals won't pass on them.

2. Outside linebacker: The Cardinals are old and beat up at those two positions and need some youth, especially if the youngster can rush the passer.

3.Tight end: Stephen Spach is the best tight end on the roster but he's coming off ACL repair. Leonard Pope has dealt with several injuries and he has trouble grasping the offense at times. The Cardinals could use an infusion of talent.

MEDICAL WATCH
OLB/DE Travis LaBoy underwent surgery to repair a torn biceps tendon suffered in the NFC title game. He is likely to miss most of the spring workouts. QB Kurt Warner underwent surgery on his left hip to repair a torn labrum and remove loose particles. He won't participate in mini-camp in early May but should be able to practice later that month or in June.

Ok, I understand with a huge lead, and Warner out, you want to just grind the clock out; but when is it too conservative?  This is the 3rd time now that the Cards gotten a huge halftime lead, and almost blow it.  Don't you know when you play not to lose, you usually do?  Wisenhunt must really hate Leinart, or have no faith in him at all.  Why wouldn't you try going down for a f ...(more)

I thought everything was going well till the second half when our secondary started falling apart. Micheal Adams needs to step up his game, Cards might want to consider Greg Toler, someone who's fast enough to keep up with these WRs. Whisenhunt took out most of his starters on the defensive side, he was us ...(more)

Beanie Wells is a great RB. I wanted to target him as soon as he declared for the draft , proposing that He is the only player at a position of need for the Cardinals that would be worth Anquan Boldi ...(more)

Boy I was worried in how the Cardinals played badly in the first half to the Seahawks today but the Cards really come up big on both sides of the ball in the second half and come out with a 31-20 win here at the desert. Now the Cards are 6-3 and have a 2 games lead over the ...(more)

Finally, a game with an effective running attack!

I think it’s time to rest some of those 3 and 4 WR sets.  When the Cardinals were in a standard formation, with a fullback and tight end, they ran the ball at will.  ...(more)

After the Arizona Cardinals 41-21 clubbing of the Chicago Bears, people should have been talking about their 4-0 road record and Kurt Warner’s brilliant 5 touchdown performance. However, after Anquan Bo ...(more)

It had all the makings of another "The Bears are who we thought they were" collaps in the works.  A huge 34-7 halftime lead.  All the momentum for the Cards, then bam.  A quick score by the Bears.  An untimely INT by Leinart followed by another Bears score.  When the ...(more)

First, congratulations to the Panthers. They took it to us and won handly doing it. They controlled every aspect of the game including a strong run against our defense...who never had an answer for them all day long.
Now, a few questions.
1- Why play a crippled Boldin if he can not get through a rout properly and we take a chance

Any chance the Cards pick up Larry Johnson? He could really be a great addition to this offense, adding depth with the potential of carrying the big load for Arizona.
