Cardinals report: Strategy and personnel

The Cardinals have the salary cap space to accommodate the big contracts required by inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, receiver Anquan Boldin and safety Adrian Wilson.

It's questionable, however, if they will decide to pay that much in cold, hard cash over the next few months. The organization's commitment to winning will be tested, and fans are ready to judge.

The club stepped up in the contract with quarterback Kurt Warner, guaranteeing $19 million of the $23 million total.

The Cardinals haven't been a major player in free agency, preferring to sharp for bargains.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

The Cardinals would like re-sign inside linebacker Karlos Dansby and strong safety Adrian Wilson this spring.

Dansby signed his franchise tender this week while Wilson has one year remaining on his deal.

The club is about $1.5 million under the cap, but could create space by releasing running back Edgerrin James ($5 million) and extending the contracts of Wilson and Dansby.

The Cardinals will take another shot at extending the contract of receiver Anquan Boldin. Boldin has backed off his vow never to re-sign with the team, but if a deal is going to be done, he must be willing to take a contract worth an average of around $7 million to $9 million a year. That's less than the $10 million average teammate Larry Fitzgerald is receiving.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Running back: The Cardinals struggled to run for most of the season. Edgerrin James will be released this spring and J.J. Arrington left for Denver. That leaves Tim Hightower as the only back on the roster. If Georgia's Knowshon Moreno or Connecticut's Donald Brown is available at No. 31, the Cardinals won't pass on them.

2. Outside linebacker: The Cardinals are old and beat up at those two positions and need some youth, especially if the youngster can rush the passer.

3.Tight end: Stephen Spach is the best tight end on the roster but he's coming off ACL repair. Leonard Pope has dealt with several injuries and he has trouble grasping the offense at times. The Cardinals could use an infusion of talent.

MEDICAL WATCH
OLB/DE Travis LaBoy underwent surgery to repair a torn biceps tendon suffered in the NFC title game. He is likely to miss most of the spring workouts. QB Kurt Warner underwent surgery on his left hip to repair a torn labrum and remove loose particles. He won't participate in mini-camp in early May but should be able to practice later that month or in June.

Kurt Warner should have a momument placed outside Phoenix stadium.  I would hope Weisenhunt finds a plac3e for him on his staff.  Imagine the levelheadedness Kurt could bring as a coach.  You look at other men of faith in coaching - Tony Dungy for example.  They always bring the level of professionalism up anot ...(more)

Cardinals fans would you make the following trade with the Vikings if given the chance

Cards get: A. Peterson, rights to B. Favre

Vikings get: L. Fitzgerald, rights to Warner, and a 3rd round pick in 2011, upgraded to 2nd if Favre plays Warner doesn't.

This is Matty's time to shine.  Sign Boldin.  Get a veteran Back Up QB.  Draft a QB in a later round.  Draft mostly defense and pick up some defense in Free Agency.  Hopefully, we can continue the Winning ways.

There's talk that the cards want to trade boldin, possibly to KC this year. Do cards fans think Boldin will or won't get traded this year. I heard KC was willing to give a #2 for boldin.?

This season really had it's ups and downs, but I'm still proud of this team they way they played the season. This team responded well to a loss by not losing back-to-back games, and they were finally winning games in the east coast which many said they wouldn't do; that will transfer well going into next year. I know most of you out there are rooting for McNabb to replace Warner but I have a much better option: Chad Pennington.

90% of you will laugh at that idea but hear me out. Pennington has a career comp % of over 66% and a passer rating of over 90, he also doesn't throw a tremendous amount of picks either. Compare that t

With Karlos Dansby becoming a free agent this offseason I'm hoping the Cards can afford to sign him to a new deal.Losing Dansby will hurt our defense next season and replacing him will be hard to do.It may be hard to keep him since he will be demanding quite a bit of money.Do you guys think the ...(more)

Cards what do you think of this possible trade. You need a QB now and the Chiefs have multipe needs on both sides of the ball. I think it would work out good for both.  I heard you might have a second and third to give up in the trade or possibly  another player. What do cards fans think of this trade do it or not, whats your opini ...(more)

(POLL) If this year (and esp the playoffs) did anything, it's made it really simple to know the areas the Cards need to address in the off-season via draft or signing.

CORNERBACK: With the exception of DRC, they need to start from scratch. McFadden might be the worst starting CB in football. Michael Adams is probably top 5.

This afternoon's game seemed eerily similar to the game vs. the Jets, last season.  Just like in that game, a couple costly turnovers early in the game made it get out of reach very quickly.  After the Cards let the Saints tie the score 7-7, you almost knew that the ...(more)

Let's hope the Cardinals beg WARNER to stay!  Then they swear on a stack of bibles that they will only draft offensive linemen and db's!  They also promise they will cut Mcfadden and sign Q.  Then they sign a paper that says they will not, under any circumstances, play anyone in a meaningless game.  Especially an ALL PRO ...(more)

It was a pretty good season for Arizona. They had lots of turnovers , while they scored many points. It was great to be in the playoffs, led by Warner.

Of course, their are rumours about Kurt & retirement, but i think he'll stay another year. When Kurt is gone, i don't really like Matt Leinar
