Bills report: Notes, quotes
--QB J.P. Losman promised he would be ready to go if called upon, and he was against the Jets. Losman, who lost his starting job to Trent Edwards after he suffered a knee injury on Sept. 23, saw his first action since that day when Edwards went down with a sprained throwing wrist. Losman nearly threw an interception with the game still tied at 3-3, but he gathered himself and led the Bills to a go-ahead field goal and then heaved an 85-yard TD pass to his favorite target, Lee Evans, that put the game away. "That's been my toughest challenge the last couple weeks, preparing and knowing that you're pretty much not going to play unless something happens," said Losman. "Not too many weeks went by, so I guess it wasn't as hard."
--Who plays quarterback for the Bills this week against Cincinnati? It will depend on whether Edwards' wrist is good to go by Wednesday. If he misses a day of practice, chances are Losman would go back in as the starter, and his performance against the Jets will make that decision a little easier. Tight-lipped coach Dick Jauron refused to talk about the issue Monday. "I probably do know the answer to that," Jauron said, "but come back on Wednesday and we'll tell you." When asked what would happen if Edwards were healthy enough to play, Jauron said, "That doesn't deserve an answer really. You're asking if (Edwards is) healthy. We don't know if he's healthy. The hypothetical is something we don't want to address, so we'll talk about it on Wednesday."
--The Bills are pounding RB Marshawn Lynch on the ground, and he is proving to be a tough runner who churns out yardage between the tackles. His next step needs to be finding a way to bounce things outside and pick up yardage in bigger chunks. Lynch has a pair of 23-yard runs, and those are his only big-play runs of the season. He has not topped 100 yards in any of his first seven games. Lynch missed a couple of series in the second quarter Sunday with a hip injury, but he returned to action and, as coach Dick Jauron said, "made a couple huge runs at the end of the game. He's an outstanding player."
--Buffalo's offensive line has been coming together little by little. Although the Bills averaged only 3.1 yards per rush against the Jets, Lynch was able to gain some tough yards and Buffalo managed eight rushing first downs in a tight, close-to-the-vest game. As for pass protection, Edwards suffered the only sack as the line did a good job picking up a variety of blitzes. The Jets had some early success using corner blitzes with rookie Darrelle Revis, but the Bills made an adjustment and the Jets stopped doing it. "I expect people will keep coming after us until we get more productive on offense, especially since we have two young quarterbacks," Jauron said.
PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES
--RB Dwayne Wright, a rookie, saw his most extensive playing time. He carried 12 times for 25 yards as veteran Anthony Thomas had to sit out the game.
--WR Josh Reed had a nice 17-yard reception among his four catches for 40 yards.
--TE Derek Schouman made the first reception of his career, a 9-yard grab. He worked primarily from the fullback spot as a blocker.
--PR Roscoe Parrish ripped off a 33-yard punt return and averaged 18.5 yards on four attempts, but his role in the offense was diminished, as he caught just one pass for 12 yards.
--TE Robert Royal had two catches for 19 yards, but he seemed to cut upfield the wrong way on a backside screen that looked as if it were set up for big yardage.
