Bills report: Notes, quotes
--WR Terrell Owens, an unrestricted free agent, was informed by club officials he would not be offered a contract, could draw interest from the Baltimore Ravens. "We're interested in T.O. We're interested in all the guys that can make our team better," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I think he's a good guy and a good player." Harbaugh was Philadelphia's special teams coach when Owens played there two seasons. Owens caught 55 passes for 829 yards last year to lead the Bills but he never lived up to the hoopla, mostly due to Buffalo's offensive line and quarterback problems. Bills fans relished having a big-time star in their midst. "I would like to thank the great fans in Buffalo, Ralph Wilson and the Bills organization for all their support this past season," Owens said on Twitter.
--Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen, who met with Bills officials at the Indianapolis Combine, will come into the NFL with experience in a pro system. Playing for former Patriots coordinator Charlie Weiss may give Clausen a leg and an arm up on other prospects. "I've obviously been in coach (Charlie) Weis' system for the past three years," he said. "I'm a little familiar with the west coast system. I'm not sure what coach's system is going to be with the Bills, but whatever it is I've played under center for the past three years under coach Weis and we've been in shotgun. I've done a lot of different varieties of offenses." The Bills are expected to attend Clausen's private workout on April 9.
--After losing OT Brad Butler to retirement, the Bills will address the position hard in free agency and the draft, coach Chan Gailey said. "With the retirement of Brad, that puts us in position of need, even moreso than we were," Gailey said. Led by Oklahoma State's Russell Okung, Rutgers' Anthony Davis, Oklahoma's Trent Williams, Iowa's Bryan Bulaga and Maryland's Bruce Campbell, this is a banner year for college tackles.
--Coach Chan Gailey appreciated that Dallas owner Jerry Jones said one of the biggest mistakes he's ever made was firing him as his coach. Gailey coached the Cowboys just two seasons, 1998 and 1999, and made the playoffs both years. "I've not talked to Jerry about that statement," Gailey said. "Jerry was very good to us while we were in Dallas and I will not disagree with his statement, but at the same time, he's got to do what he thinks is best at the time. If you haven't made a mistake in this world -- and I'm not saying that he did or didn't -- but if you haven't made a mistake in this world then you haven't made decisions."
--DT Marlon Favorite, a member of LSU's 2007 national champs where he played nose tackle, signed with the Bills as a free agent. The team has begun finding options to play line in their new 3-4 scheme. The 6-1, 317-pound Favorite was originally signed by Carolina coming out of college but has bounced around with four other NFL teams in his brief NFL career.
--The Bills announced that they have offered tenders to four RFAs: LB Keith Ellison, TE Derek Schouman, S George Wilson and CB Ashton Youboty.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"We wanted to inform all three players ahead of the start of the free agency period so they could begin making their plans. We just felt that was the right thing to do. All three have represented our organization with class and we thank them for their dedication and hard work." -- GM Buddy Nix on informing Terrell Owens, Josh Reed and Ryan Denney they would not be retained.
