Bills report: Notes, quotes
--MLB Paul Posluszny said he had a procedure on his groin recently that will keep him out of the start of training camp. "I think I'll be doing stuff on the side, just getting back into it on my own," he said. "But I feel like I'll be back with the team pretty fast because it was a really, really minor thing. It was to solve a small problem now so it doesn't become a bigger one later but, like I said, I feel great right now. They just want to take it real slow and be really cautious with it."
Posluszny said the procedure was done two weeks ago after he "tweaked something in OTA's and minicamp and kept going on it."
--OT Demetrius Bell (knee) is "further along than we had hoped at this time," according to GM Buddy Nix. Nix added that the team will be "smart with him," and not have Bell participate in two-a-day practices.
--RB Fred Jackson opens training camp as the starting running back, but said he has talked to rookie C.J. Spiller, who remains unsigned. "It always plays a role into getting started on the right foot," Jackson said of getting to training camp on time. "The sooner you can get here, the better. He knows that and he's well aware of that. He's trying to get [his contract] done and get here as soon as he can. We all have to be on the same page and the sooner he can get here, the better."
--DE Aaron Schobel said he's considering coming back for 2010 after leaning toward retirement throughout the offseason.
"I'm leaning more toward playing than I was a month ago," Schobel told The Buffalo News. "I don't know what the Bills would do or how much time they would give me (to make a decision), but I'm thinking about it."
Schobel, 32, the Bills' No. 2 all-time sack leader, was due to earn a $2 million roster bonus on March 10 but did not take the physical necessary to collect it.
"I don't know what his change of heart is," said GM Buddy Nix, who said Schobel has not contacted him. "Not one bit, I really haven't. The only way I find out is I read the paper or I hear through you guys."
--TE Joe Klopfenstein was placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. He practiced on a limited basis during spring drills when the team and coaching staff also provided no details on what his injury is. The four-year NFL veteran, who started 37 games for St. Louis from 2006-08, played in only one game for the Bills last season after signing late in the year. It's possible Klopfenstein could negotiate an injury settlement and sign elsewhere if his injury isn't season-ending.
--Coach Chan Gailey has promised his players a fair and honest opportunity to make the team. It's not just smoke. Buffalo hasn't made the playoffs in a decade. Fifty-six players were with the team in some capacity during last season's 6-10 finish. There are eight free agents, nine draft picks and nine rookie free agents. "Very few players on our football team have things locked up," Gailey said.
--Third-round pick Alex Carrington, a defensive end out of Arkansas State, sounded more relieved than happy after signing his first pro contract. To him, being in camp on time was more important than his bank account, although he did ink a four-year deal that came with an $870,000 bonus. "It's quite a bit of a relief," Carrington said. "I'm glad my deal got done so that wouldn't be on my mind. ... I didn't want to miss a day of training camp."
--You know the Bills are loaded at defensive back when a player as solid as CB Drayton Florence is slated to play nickel after starting 13 games last season after Leodis McKelvin went down with a leg injury. Florence finished with 60 tackles and 11 passed defended with one pick. "I just go out there and do what I have to do when I get my opportunity," Florence told Ocala.com. "My coaches always told me (that) the cream of the crop always rises to the top. The key is that you have to be prepared every day and whatever the challenge may be, just keep working at it and give your best effort and good things will happen." Florence is excited about the team's switch to a 3-4 scheme, which means more man coverage for its corners. "That's what I like doing," he said.
--RB C.J. Spiller doesn't figure to let nerves get the best of him when practicing before the large crowds that typically fill the stands at training camp at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. "I don't feel any pressure," he said. "There are a lot of guys that went in the first round on this team. The main thing is just coming in and learning. Like I have said earlier, I think pressure (comes) when you are unprepared."
--CB Terrence McGee recently made a $25,000 gift to his alma mater, Northwestern (La.) State, to help support an effort to build a new athletic field house. McGee's generosity is magnified by the fact he's had legal and financial problems regarding his agents and advisors.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I'm going to try and get some rest. We've been going pretty hard since I got here on Jan. 18 or whenever it was. So we're going to try and get some rest and get ready to go 24/7 for seven months." -- Coach Chan Gailey on his plans prior to training camp.
