Bills report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Inside slant · Strategy and personnel

--RB Marshawn Lynch, who missed two preseason games with an ankle injury, was scheduled to see action against Detroit on Sept. 2. Lynch, who lost his starting job to Fred Jackson a year ago, is now also battling dynamic rookie C.J. Spiller for playing time. "Great, great," Lynch said when asked what he thought of Spiller's play, which included an electrifying 20-yard TD run against the Bengals last weekend. "The young guy came in and has been a big help. Three games, three touchdowns. He's doing pretty good." The Bills plan a three-headed attack at running back but due to injuries to Jackson and Lynch this summer, nobody is certain how it will play itself out. Jackson is practicing but remains a long-shot to be ready for the season opener Sept. 12 vs. Miami.

--WR Roscoe Parrish has found new life under coach Chan Gailey. One of the NFL's all-time leading punt returns, Parrish was an afterthought as a wide receiver under previous coaches Mike Mularkey and Dick Jauron. He was even benched by Jauron last year after muffing a punt that cost Buffalo a game against Cleveland. Despite his rare speed and good hands, Parrish wound up with just three catches for 34 yards. This summer, Parrish has shined working out of the slot and has seven catches for 82 yards and a TD. "In this profession, you never get down on yourself," Parrish said. "Last year was tough and I had to handle myself like a professional and have a good attitude. You never know what tomorrow will bring." It brought Gailey, one of the NFL's most successful offensive coordinators who knows what speed can do."

--Rookie OT Ed Wang, who underwent thumb surgery earlier in camp, is working his way back but is still a ways away from playing. "No, we're not trying to get him ready," Gailey said about Wang's chances of suiting up against the Detroit Lions. "He doesn't have a way to grip yet, not that offensive linemen ever hold. But he has no way to grip." Wang is expected to be carried on the 53-man roster. Rosters must be set on Saturday.

--Buffalo's secondary, which intercepted 28 passes a year ago, most since 1970, has picked up where it left off. Terrence McGee and Reggie Corner have each returned an interception for a touchdown this preseason. "I feel like we're ready, but I feel every day that we can get better and we can definitely improve," said Corner, who picked off Cincinnati's Jordan Palmer last week and returned the ball 20 yards for a score to seal Buffalo's 35-20 win.

--DE Marcus Stroud is among several Bills growing mustaches for good luck. "The Mustache Gang, we're here," Stroud said. "If we can keep winning, the Mustache Gang isn't going anywhere. 'Stache for life baby.'"

--Former Bills WR Terrell Owens, now with the Cincinnati Bengals, had some good things to say about QB Trent Edwards, who was caught in the middle of a dysfunctional coaching situation a year ago when he lost his job to Ryan Fitzpatrick. "I see a different demeanor in Trent, he looks very comfortable and poised back there and he has a number of playmakers to make him feel even more comfortable," T.O. said after last week's preseason game. "When you've got a back like C.J. Spiller, I mean, he's going to make his job easier. Trent can assess the matchups (he'll get) and he can deliver the ball where it needs to be."

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I think we had a pretty good idea of what he could do. To say that all he's done is verify that would sort of be an understatement. I think we understood it and I'm excited about his year." -- Coach Chan Gailey on rookie running back C.J. Spiller.
