Bills report: Notes, quotes
--After hitting WR Eric Moulds with a TD bomb during a night practice in front of about 6,000 fans, QB Drew Bledsoe was asked if that was for the benefit of the fans. "No, that was for my benefit. That's fun."
--The Bills have been rained off of their grass practice fields at St. John Fisher College twice so far yet have still managed to practice outside thanks to an arrangement with a nearby high school. East Rochester High School, located just a mile down the street, has the same artificial synthetic playing surface on its football field as used at Ralph Wilson Stadium. "It (sheds) the water very well," coach Mike Mularkey said. "The players like it because their joints and knees feel better working on it."
--TE Mark Campbell, who had his best NFL season a year ago with 34 catches for 339 yards, is solidly entrenched as the starter for Buffalo. "Last year was a breakout year for him. I think he's done a great job of just building upon that over the course of the last eight months," TE coach Frank Verducci said. "He's definitely our leader within the group and he sets the tempo for all the other guys."
--Bills great Ernie Warlick, a tight end from 1962-65, attended Bills Alumni Day at training camp and left impressed with the state-of-the-art training facilities. "Look at the food they get now
-- it's tremendous," Warlick said. "Back then, we were on our own for lunch. We had to find a restaurant and still get back in time for the afternoon practice." Also in attendance were Jim Kelly, Kent Hull, Charley Ferguson, Jeff Nixon and Lou Piccone.
--Bills DE Constantin Ritzmann is no ordinary NFL rookie. He's a native of Germany who came to America as an exchange student, landing a scholarship to the University of Tennessee after playing just one year of high school football. That one season for North Florida Christian in Tallahassee, Ritzmann notched 26 sacks. "I'm just here living a dream," Ritzmann said. "Growing up, it's impossible for a German kid to think he'd make it to NFL, there's like nobody whoever has done it. I'm just here trying to do what I can. I think I'm doing well. I hear some good things from people, and hopefully I can stick around here or go somewhere else and show I can play." Talk about a natural for NFL Europe.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I was a rookie with the 49ers and we played the Oakland Raiders. I had to block Lyle Alzado. I remember Alzado had a penalty called on him and the next play I lined up against him, he had stuff dripping off of his facemask. I don't know if it was because he was ticked off but I was a nervous wreck. But it was a great experience. There's nothing like it." - Bills coach Mike Mularkey talking about his first preseason game as a player.
