Bills report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Strategy and personnel · Inside slant

--Bills owner Ralph Wilson said he appreciated all Drew Bledsoe did for the Bills, on the field and off. But watching new blood has always energized the club's 86-year-old founder. He's a closet draftnik and is eagerly looking forward to watching J.P. Losman hit the field running this spring.

"J.P., we've got a lot of faith in him,'' Wilson told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. "We think he's going to be a good quarterback, now time will tell. He's got a great arm, he's mobile but will he make the right decisions? We've had a couple guys with great arms in the past, but a long with that is his decision making. Our people ... they've seen J.P. in college and they like him very much. He's got everything, but there's a learning curve. He won't set the world on fire right away. Every QB goes through it -- except (Ben) Roethlisberger."

--The Bills had a full contingent of scouts and player personnel folks at the annual cattle call of college prospects, also known as the NFL Combine, which concludes Tuesday in Indianapolis. The Combine, once a few days long, now lasts a week. The merits of the Combine can be debated, but as Buffalobills.com points out, prospects invited to the Combine have a superior chance of hearing their name called on draft weekend than those who aren't. Since 1998, only 13 of the 667 total picks on Day 1 of the draft did not take part in Combine workouts. Over the past 12 years, 64 percent of Combine participants have been drafted (2,487 of 3,319). The Bills follow the norm. Over the past seven seasons, each of their Day 1 picks were scouted at the Combine.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I've seen a lot of changes on all the teams I've been on. I've seen Darrell Green go in Washington and Emmitt Smith go in Dallas, so from that standpoint, nothing surprises me in the NFL." -- Bills guard Ross Tucker reacting to the release of 12-year veteran Drew Bledsoe, the NFL's 10th all-time passer.
