Bills report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Inside slant · Strategy and personnel

--When the NFL announced plans for a regular-season game outside the United States in 2005, Bills fans grew restless. One possibility was having Buffalo play an opponent in nearby Toronto, leaving Bills fans with only six true home games. Instead, Arizona will face San Francisco at Azteca Stadium on Oct. 2. It will count as one of the Cardinals' eight home games and they welcome the move. It beats playing in a half-empty Sun Devil Stadium. The Cardinals move into a new facility in 2006.

--The Bills and Cleveland Browns won't scrimmage this summer; it was Buffalo's turn to travel to Cleveland. New Browns coach Romeo Crennel said he prefers to spend more time, at least this year, teaching in a closed practice setting than preparing for a day of intra-squad practicing followed by a day-long scrimmage. Bills coach Mike Mularkey is trying to line up another team to scrimmage and practice with, preferably the New York Giants who work out in Albany, but the Giants schedule may be booked.

--Since 1993 when the league began awarding compensatory draft picks for losing free agents, the Bills have been awarded 20 picks, fourth most in the league. Buffalo won't be adding to that total this year, however, as it did not receive any of the 32 picks the league has doled out for the 2005 draft. The Bills moves last year didn't make them eligible for compensation under the formula used. For example, Buffalo did lose star CB Antoine Winfield, but added Pro Bowl veteran CB Troy Vincent.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I was kind of surprised on how many people actually came back when I pulled up here Monday. I don't believe we had this many people here last year so it was a pleasant surprise that people are taking it serious that we have a lot of potential ... Mike (coach Mike Mularkey) expects a lot out of us and we're willing to put our foot forward and give him everything we can. Especially in this business, you could be here one day and gone the next. You have to play like it's your last and prepare like it's your last." - DE Chris Kelsay commenting on the Bills off-season workout program that has started.
