Bills report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Inside slant · Strategy and personnel

--Had the Bills hung onto their 2004 first-round pick, they would've chosen 20th overall. As it turns out, they would've had the chance the select Cal's Aaron Rodgers, the second-ranked quarterback who went to Green Bay at 24. Rodgers and Utah's Alex Smith, who went to San Francisco with the first overall pick, had similar grades as Losman. The big advantage for Buffalo grabbing its QB of the future in 2004 is that Losman has been in the team's system for a full year. "Losman was rated right in line with Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers," ESPN analyst Kiper said on a national conference call. "He would have been right in that grouping. ... But now you've got a year with him. Now he's your starting quarterback. You've had a whole year to get him ready. So you're ahead of the game if you're the Buffalo Bills."

--The selection of Nebraska LB Barrett Rudd by Tampa Bay in the second round stirred some memories at One Bills Drive. Rudd's dad, Tom, was the Bills' No. 1 pick in 1975. The elder Rudd played just three seasons for Buffalo.

--The Bills top two picks hailing from the same school has happened only once before in team history. In 1975, Buffalo took Nebraska linebackers Tom Rudd and Bob Nelson 1-2. Making the University of Miami one-stop shopping for WR Roscoe Parrish and TE Kevin Everett made perfect sense for assistant GM Tom Modrak. "Well it helps because you go back there a lot and there's been a lot of good players to come out of there," he said. "That doesn't make your decision, but that staff down there and that school are open to the scouts. You can get in there and get a good feel for the people. (Plus) the Miami players play at a high level all of the time, and it's not just a high level on Saturdays but it's a high level in practice every day because of the people they have to compete against." Parrish and Everett are the eighth and ninth Hurricanes drafted by the Bills, following the likes of Jim Kelly (1983) and Willis McGahee (2003).

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I feel like I'm just as good as those guys, if not better. There are things I need to work on to hit my goals, but I plan on reaching that." - Bills third-round pick Kevin Everett from Miami when asked how he stacks up against Bubba Franks (Packers 2000), Jeremy Shockey (Giants 2002) and Kellen Winslow (Browns 2004), recent Hurricanes tight ends who were picked in the first round.
