Bills report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Strategy and personnel · Inside slant

--Joe Ferguson, who played 12 seasons for the Bills and set many of the team passing marks later broken by Jim Kelly, is currently undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer at a Houston hospital. Frank Broyles, his coach at the University of Arkansas, reported that Ferguson is in good spirits. "He feels good that the treatment is working," Broyles said. "But tell everyone to include Joe in their thoughts and prayers." Ferguson is a former Razorbacks assistant coach. A third-round pick of the Bills in 1973, he played for Buffalo, Indianapolis, Detroit and Tampa Bay before retiring after the 1990 season.

--The Bills are planning a four-day fan festival for June 3-5 at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Part of the festivities will include airing the NFL Films documentary "The Comeback," the story of Buffalo's historic 32-point rally against the Houston Oilers in the 1993 playoffs on the JumoTron in the stadium where the game took place. Said Bills' special teams star Steve Tasker: "If everybody who has come up to me over the years and said they were there that day (shows up), there will be 1.5 million people in the stands."

--The Bills are tinkering with the idea of signing Brigham Young special teams ace Matt Payne, who remains a college free agent. Young, BYU's kicker and punter, is 6-4, 240 pounds. His hits on return specialists were as entertaining as his kicks and punts.

--RB ReShard Lee, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Bills, his agent, Harold Lewis, told the Ft. Worth Star Telegram.

--RT Mike Williams, whose career has been a roller-coaster ride since the Bills drafted him fourth overall in 2002, is drawing high praise from his coaches for his offseason regimen. Williams has been in Buffalo much of the offseason working on his conditioning and he is perhaps poised to finally reach his full potential. "It's good on his part," coach Mike Mularkey said. "I think he's stronger that he was a year ago, doing quickness drills, and it's showing up out here (on the field)."

QUOTE TO NOTE
"My little son (three-year-old Thurman) wasn't around. Annika, even though she's 8, she remembers some parts of daddy being out there playing football. But it will be a special moment for my son to hear the screaming crowd. I know a couple of the 34 jerseys have been replaced by 21 but I can live with that." -- Bills RB legend Thurman Thomas, who will be inducted onto the club's Wall of Fame on Oct. 9. He's a fan of Willis McGahee, too.
