Bills report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Inside slant · Strategy and personnel

--The Bills will conduct a series of three-day organized team activities over a three-week period starting next week. The team's new coaching staff did a good chunk of installation work in two previous voluntary camps. Attendance was nearly 100 percent, with fewer than a handful of veterans choosing not to attend. Of course, one very important player has yet to attend, RB Willis McGahee. Insiders predict a contract holdout is looming, but so far, agent Drew Rosenhaus is keeping mum, particularly after the negative press he received during the Terrell Owens controversy. "We'd love to have him here," Jauron said of McGahee after the last mini-camp. "But the fact is, we have so many guys here and recognize that it is voluntary. We'll just focus on the great turnout we have."

--Jauron is hoping free agent veteran RB Anthony Thomas can earn the No. 2 job behind McGahee. Thomas, a second-round pick in 2001, gave Jauron some very good years in Chicago before his career began to fade. "We had him probably rated higher than other people," Jauron said of the former Michigan star. "I still believe he's faster than people think and I know he's got good hands. He's a terrific guy, just a really good fit for our team then."

--CB Jabari Greer, who made the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2003, finished up his degree work at the University of Tennessee this spring. One his fellow graduates was DE Jason Hall, whom the Bills signed as an undrafted free agent this month.

--Andre Reed, who will go on the Bills Wall of Fame this fall, said he wasn't relieved that Eric Moulds was traded to Houston this off-season. Moulds was the only threat to his many Bills records set over 15 seasons, coming within 266 catches, 3,999 yards and 38 TDs playing 10 seasons in Buffalo. "I think he could've broken them knowing the kind of player Eric is," Reed said. "He had a bunch of quarterbacks in his 10 years there, too, and to do what he did is a testament to how he worked and what kind of player he is. I wish he could've made a run at it because to me, records are made to be broken. It was something for him to shoot for. I'm sure he was aware of the things I did."

--Speaking of honors, Reed's Bills teammate, DE Bruce Smith, was named to the College Football Hall of Fame. Smith, the NFL's all-time leader in sacks, credited his parents and Bill Dooley, his coach at Virginia Tech, for his success. "He had a profound impact on my career, and my life as well," Smith said of Dooley, the Hokies coach from 1978 to'86.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's obvious to say, but it's critically important who you pick and how it pans out. That's true both in free agency and the draft. You've got to be a little bit lucky because it's not an exact science. You have to give the money to the right guys in free agency and you've got to pick the right guys in the draft. Then you have to have a number of outstanding guys, the playmakers, guys who will change a game for you." -- Coach Dick Jauron on the process of building a winning team.
