--The Bengals released an updated depth chart Aug. 4. Fullback Jeremi Johnson, still not on the field because of weight-related issues, has been demoted from starter to fourth string. Daniel Coats is the new No. 1 fullback, with Bradley Glatthaar moving up to No. 2.
At strong-side linebacker, Ahmad Brooks has dropped from No. 2 to third, with Darryl Blackstock moving up from third to second.
At punt returner, cornerback Deltha O'Neal has assumed the first position, ahead of wide receiver Antonio Chatman.
--For three seasons (2003-05), Bengals wide receiver Antonio Chatman was with the Green Bay Packers. He had 61 receptions in his time there, five for touchdowns, and his quarterback was Brett Favre. Chatman was surprised Thursday when teammates told him Favre had been traded to the New York Jets for a conditional fourth-round draft pick.
"It shocked me. I didn't know. A couple of guys told me," Chatman said after practice. "It's sad. I thought for sure Brett would retire with the Packers. You go back to how Jerry Rice ended his career."
Rice, the long-time San Francisco 49ers great in their Super Bowl era, played in Oakland and Seattle.
"Would you ever want to see (quarterback) John Elway with anybody but Denver?" Chatman said. "I think Brett made his decision to retire a little early in the offseason. He probably should have waited."
Chatman spent 2005 with Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay's new starter. The Bengals played Monday night in their preseason opener at Lambeau Field. Chatman said he expects Favre to still play at a high level for the Jets. The Bengals will play at the Meadowland Oct. 12 against the Jets. Favre is coming off one of his most productive seasons in his long career; he threw for 4,155 yards and had 28 touchdowns against just 15 interceptions.
"Donald Driver and I always used to mess with Brett," Chatman said of the Packers star receiver.
--Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson is starting his 25th season with the club.
"It's kind of a fantastic thing. I'm just as excited as I was the first one," Anderson said. "It's just that the apprehension is gone."
Anderson, who turned 60 in March, joined the Bengals after working as an assistant coach for four seasons at Stanford.
"I'm grateful to Sam Wyche, who brought me to Cincinnati, and the Brown family and all the other coaches I have worked for; it's been an honor and a pleasure to work for everyone," Anderson said.
Anderson has had five Pro Bowl players: James Brooks (4); Harold Green (1); Corey Dillon (3); Lorenzo Neal (1); and Rudi Johnson (1).
QUOTE TO NOTE
"You no longer see Marvin (Lewis) coaching every position on defense. Marvin told me this summer, `I don't get a chance to say anything. Zim's got the whole defense locked down.'" -- Bengals 13th-year offensive tackle Willie Anderson, on the impact of first-year defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
