Training camp goals.

1. Settle the starting left tackle.

The Texans enter camp hopeful that Charles Spencer will be able to return from a serious knee injury he suffered in Week 2 of last season. His rehab has been exceptional, but there is concern regarding the cartilage around the injury. Doctors are unsure if it remains intact after the injury, and they will find out when they see how the knee reacts to practicing.

If Spencer is unable to return to his starting form by the time the season opens, the Texans will have to decide if Ephraim Salaam still has the capabilities of playing every down. Last season, Salaam played through a slew of injuries and will do the same this year if given the opportunity. Jordan Black was a free agent the Texans picked up as insurance in case Spencer and Salaam are both unable to go.

Second-year tackle Eric Winston, currently slated to start on the right side, will be given reps on the left to see if he is capable of moving back to his more natural position he played in college.

2. Improve defensive line.

The Texans are doing all they can to ensure that the defensive line is the strength of the team this season. In addition to drafting Amobi Okoye with their top pick - making him their fourth-consecutive defensive lineman selected in the first-round of the draft - the Texans have changed the coaching staff. Jethro Franklin and Frank Bush are now in charge of developing a young group of linemen that struggled last season.

They are especially focusing on Williams, who is completely healed from the plantar fasciitis. He also seems to be entering with a better state of mind. The chip on his shoulder seems to be much smaller and he's more relaxed than he was at any point last season.

The coaches spent much of the offseason so far working on fundamentals - a seemingly simple idea that some linemen complained they never worked on last year. That will continue to be a big focus in training camp.

3. Establish the run game.

The Texans must tweak the offense to play to the strengths of quarterback Matt Schaub. They also cannot abandon the run game like they were forced to do at times last season.

One of their biggest offseason free agent signings was that of running back Ahman Green. The Texans will work him just once a day during two-a-days to keep him healthy. Ron Dayne will probably be on the same schedule. They must keep those two in shape and healthy in order for the offense to find success this season.

Schaub isn't as mobile of a quarterback as David Carr was, and so there will be less rolling out to the left and right. Unlike Carr, however, Schaub won't carry the burden of the entire offense on his shoulders. The Texans will work on trying to establish a strong and effective running game. Schaub will then be asked to play off the run game - taking what the defense gives them.

The Texans haven't had a solid running game in the past, and now must try to change that if they are going to become a competitive franchise week-in and week-out.

CAMP CALENDAR

He's not the guy.
As I watched Matt Schaub go fetal to "set up" Kris Brown, I wondered why.  Why just fall?

I have heard from several that "what if there is a sack, or a penalty, or a turnover"?.

Go read the Vince Young poll and tell me why Nashmeister is rated in the Top 100. Is it because he knows nothing about football or because he has been around the longest? I would say a combination of both. If any of you watched the Titans game today, it may have been the g ...(more)

Tom Coughlin never benched Tiki Barber when he fumbled.  Coaches don't bench quarterbacks for throwing two or three picks.  He needs to understand that Steve Slaton is a play-maker and he needs to get him his touches.  Chris Brown has been horribl ...(more)

At this point we're 5-5 and at the medicore mark again. But the talent on this team is anything but medicore. That has a lot of fans looking at Gary Kubiak. Is it justified? I don't know. I question him myself a bit as well because many times we start the game as if not prepared nor motivated to play. Granted I put a lot of weight into an individual motivating themself but not being prepared ...(more)

Hey we all know the last 3 games have sucked for the Texans but I think one bright spot is that Slaton hasnt fumbled for a month and the talk about it is dying down some (Kris Brown has taken a lot of the heat off Slaton too). But also I saw Slaton run fairly well today. M ...(more)

(POLL) Texans need to get thier mind right and start dialing Vinces agent.  Because if this thing don't work out in Tennessee, I would love to see him where he was supposed to be.  Does anyone agree?

So, Kieth Bullock ( sp?), feels safe trash talking the Texans, to the media, going into MNF. I seem to remember Haynesworth doing the same thing last year before the Texans beat the Titans here last year, how well did that work out for you then? Haynesworth was carried off the field ...(more)

Heh, yeah I know we did in the end but I say that because I don't feel as bad as I usually would. It was the type of lost that leaves a sick feeling in your stomach as it all hinged on a kick in the end but when I sat back and thought about it....I was proud of how the Texans played.

Let's really look at it. One analyst said 'Thi

There isnt a choice in this, he has to be fired, he has cost the Texans 2 games this year on kicks that he should make.

As a fan of the game...I sat and watched last night and couldn't help but wonder if Kubiak is trying to hurt the Texans chances at winning...You have a game changing RB in Steve Slaton who could take it to the house with ANY opening in the O-line...Simply having him in the ...(more)

Tough loss to the Titans tonight and it reminded me of so many games he cost the Steelers when he was here. You just can't count on him. I really would like to see the Texans make the playoffs but its tough when your kicker ...(more)

the Texans if at all possible are the most out of shape team in football, they are probably about the 12th or 13th most talented team of the 32teams but they tire out like a sprinter horse going one turn in the first half to going from 6furlongs to a two turn second half race against older even with a home bias and payton manning getting mor ...(more)
