Colts report: Strategy and personnel

Strategy and personnel · Inside slant · Notes, quotes

Rookie wide receiver Michael DePriest was waived.

Another rookie, cornerback Antonio Smith, has been placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury that he incurred during spring drills.

--TE Mike Seidman, who had been signed this past spring after five seasons with Carolina, was placed on the Colts' injured reserve list with a knee injury.

--WR Craphonso Thorpe, picked up on waivers by Indianapolis last month, has done a pretty good job as a kick returner. Thorpe is in a crowded position as a receiver but could end up making the roster on a return specialist.

--DE Jeff Charleston has played pretty well in limited work during training camp. Charleston had a big tackle for loss of RB Joseph Addai in a recent controlled scrimmage.

--LB Tyjuan Hagler is becoming more comfortable playing strong side linebacker. Hagler is currently backing up starter Rob Morris, spent most of his time last year on the weak side.

--PK Shane Andrus has been impressive during camp, although his chances of making the final roster would be appear to slim with the presence of PK Adam Vinatieri around. Andrus, though, has made all five of his field goal attempts in two controlled workouts, including one from 52 yards out.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK
Aaron Moorehead , John Standeford vs. Roy Hall for fourth receiver position. Moorehead and Standeford are the veterans in the Colts' offense. Hall, one of the team's fifth-round draft choices last spring, is still learning the offense. Still, Hall has shown enough athletic skills and versatility to make a strong push for the job as the fourth receiver in the rotation.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS
Tony Ugoh vs. Charlie Johnson for starting LOT: Ugoh is getting the first chance to replace Tarik Glenn in the Colts' starting lineup. Johnson is serving as the primary backup at both right and left offensive tackle. Ugoh has played well so far in practice, but there's still a long way to go before the start of the regular season.

--Dede Dorsey vs. Kenton Keith, Clifford Dawson for No. 2 RB: Dorsey is the guy to beat out but both Keith and Dawson have had their moments during the first week of training camp. Dawson is perhaps the most intriguing as the former undrafted free agent has been turning heads with his ability to pick things up quickly and for his tenacity.

--Josh Betts vs. John Navarre for No. 3 QB: Navarre was brought in from Arizona to perhaps make a play to be the team's primary backup spot behind starter Peyton Manning. Jim Sorgi , though, remains solidly entrenched at No. 2. Now it Navarre vs. second-year Betts for the No. 3 spot. Betts appears to be ahead so far.

ROOKIE REPORT
WR Anthony Gonzalez is the real deal. He has been learning the complicated Colts' offense about as well as can be expected. He is currently working with the first-team offense as the slot receiver.

--OT Tony Ugoh has been tabbed as the early replacement for Tarik Glenn at left offensive tackle. He is getting a quick lesson about the NFL by matching up against DE Dwight Freeney in positional drills. He is currently holding his own.

--CB Dante Hughes is now going by his middle name instead of his first name of Daymeion. Has had his ups and downs so far, but that is to be expected facing the likes of Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne on a daily basis during practice.

--DT Quinn Pitcock has yet to practice. Did not pass his physical until late in the week due to leg injury incurred during offseason workouts. Not expected to take the field until the second week of training camp.

--S Brannon Condren is an impressive athlete who is expected to earn a spot in the safety rotation for the Colts. Will most likely see a lot of playing time on special teams as a rookie.

--LB Clint Session is working as a backup right now, but will be used primarily on special teams this season. Hard-nosed player who is still learning the Colts' defensive system.

--WR Roy Hall is perhaps the biggest surprise among the draftees. Hall will play all over the field for the Colts. He has seen work as an outside and slot receiver and as a gunner on special teams. May also get time as a tight end or H-back on occasion.

--CB Michael Coe has been having the same rollercoaster ride as Hughes in terms of trying to matchup on a daily basis against the likes of Harrison and Wayne. There have been some bright spots and he is battling Hughes and second-year CB Tim Jennings to be the Colts' nickel back.

--DE Keyunta Dawson is not far behind rookie WR Roy Hall in being a major hit of training camp. Will be working both as a defensive end and a defensive tackle. Was impressive in first controlled scrimmage of camp as he came up with two sacks, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble.

--RB Clifton Dawson could end up being the Dominic Rhodes of this year's rookie free agent signees. He has shown good power inside and quickness to get to the outside. Really opened some eyes during a recent pass blocking drill facing off against LB Freddy Keiaho.

--TE Gijon Robinson is an intriguing player who has started to come on a bit during the first week of training camp. Has made some nice catches in goal-line situations. Former college fullback who is making the transition to tight end/H-back role.

INJURY REPORT
S Bob Sanders (shoulder) and LB Keith O'Neil have been placed on the Colts' physically unable to perform list. Both might be able to resume a partial practice regimen after the team's preseason opener at Dallas.

LB Rob Morris, DE Robert Mathis and DT Anthony McFarland underwent MRI's at the end of the first week of camp. Dungy called the medical procedures "precautionary" for all three although there were some unsubstantiated reports that McFarland's injury (knee) might be of more serious nature.

DE Ben Ishola (ankle), WR Devin Aromashodu (hamstring), and OT Gabe Hall (knee) have missed practice time. All three might be able to return in the next week. OT Charlie Johnson (groin) missed the team's initial controlled scrimmage of camp, but is not expected to be sidelined for a lengthy period of time.
