Veteran running back Fred Taylor thinks the three-year contract extension he signed that locks him to the team through 2010 means he'll retire as a Jaguar.

"As long as my health is good, I'll retire as a Jaguar, which is the best part about the deal," Taylor said.

What he doesn't seem to realize is that the contract probably means he won't retire as a Jaguar.

Taylor wanted an upgrade from his $2.55 million base to $5 million and the Jaguars gave it to him. He'll now get an $800,000 base this year with a $4.2 million roster.

The next three years, he'll get a $1 million roster bonus with base salaries of $4 million, $5 million and $6 million.

The reality is that Taylor turned 31 last month and players with big contracts over 30 are always vulnerable the minute they don't perform at a high level.

On top of that, Taylor's contract contains no up front money so the Jaguars can cut him at any time in the future without taking any hit against their salary cap.

They gave him a $4.2 million roster bonus instead of a signing bonus so they take all the hit against this year's cap. The Jaguars have cap space to use because they're not going to be big spenders in free agency. As a small market team in a league which has yet to get local revenue sharing, the Jaguars are cash strapped and watch their spending carefully.

That means what is likely to happen is that once Taylor starts to slow down, the Jaguars will want him to take a salary cut.

That's why tight end Kyle Brady is hitting the free agent market. He would have returned for the $2.1 million base he got last year, but the Jaguars wanted to cut him to $1.5 million.

So Taylor at some time in the future will likely have to decide whether to take the salary cut or move on or even retire.

But it's very unlikely he'll ever see the $23 million the contract is worth over the next four years.

I don't care who posts whatever kind of feelings on this thread.  I'm keeping this at the top of the list until Jack gets fired.  Jack is a failure at his job.  He's failed to prepare this team to play a Seahawks team that's really not that great.  What's worse is they look like world beaters.  He says he's taking o ...(more)

It is time that the Jaguars draft a QB in the next draft.  Every year I pray that we get a new QB but we don't, therefore we don't win many games.  The years we have had good QB play we have done well.  David Garrar ...(more)

So before there are over 9,000 posts on this board calling for Del Rio and Garrard's heads, I just wanted to give my two cents concerning where the Jaguars stand now.
This loss hurt us in our playoff chances, no doubt. Coming out of this week 7-4 would have us tied with Denver atop the wildcard race (and possibly Pittsburgh if they win

The Jaguars just need to find the fastest dude in the draft and get him.  Doesn't matter the position, just get him and hope he plays running back.  Chris Johnson is a beast, mainly because he's fast as doo doo.  Who else was holding on to their seats when the ...(more)

Rashard Jennings had a monstrosity of a block in the fourth quarter. I'm surprised nobody said anything on any highlight reels.  Shades of Mojo.  I mean he absolutely crushed a dude.

They should have drafted Crabtree and fire Scobee. What is with this franchise?!?!?!? How could they let Crabtree slip through their hands like that. He was right there waiting for us. And Scobee, now this guy has to go. He has been the handicap of this team since he was drafted.

I will not buy another game ticket until i see some improving in the passing game and the kickin

Once upon a time, there was a wicked HC who oppressed his QB with an ultraconservsative scheme.
The HC would only let his QB go into the candy store of the deep passing game, as a last resort of not having anywhere else to go with his game, and even then he short changed the young QB by abandoning the run.

One day the young QB got mad and went off on the wicked HC during a Texa ...(more)

Go to Jaguars.com, look at the first piece called "Jags in recovery mode" and look at that picture.  David on the ground wrything in pain, a defender on him, and Eugene Monroe in the background.  A picture says a thousand words.

(POLL) Who is the better team, the 10-0 Colts or the 10-0 Saints?

Saints have been beating opponents bad lately. They have come from behind in a few, including being dominated by the Dolphins in the 1st half.

It isn't a foregone conclusion that the Jaguars will finish at or above .500. But if this team finishes there with the huge turnover, and the extremely young team (particularly on defense) that's a 3-4 game improvement. Do you think that save JDR's job? I think it does. Mainly because the JAguars simply can't afford to pay another coach and ...(more)

Well this year the Jags are making a push for the playoffs. Who would have really thought about mentioning the word "playoffs" down here in J'ville? I was very optimistic and I still am but the truth of the matter is that the Jags are in the wildcard hunt and it feels good to be talking about around this time of the season. And they are doing it with a roster full of ...(more)
