Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio is showing by his personnel moves that he knows he has to win now.
He signed veteran corner Aaron Glenn this week even though he admitted Glenn is a one-year acquisition. He signed veteran safety Sammy Knight, another graybeard, on Aug. 13. He previously signed defensive tackle Seth Payne and linebacker Chris Claiborne and had to cut both of them because he saw they couldn't play. Del Rio's not worried about the future. This year is it for him. To make room for Glenn, they released lineman Tutan Reyes.
They then re-signed Reyes and cut tight end Richard Angulo.
PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES
--LB Clint Ingram hasn't practiced this week because of a sprained ankle and will probably miss this game.
--DE Paul Spicer missed the last three preseason games with a back injury, but he's practicing this week and will probably see action in the rotation.
--S Reggie Nelson sat out the last two preseason games with an ankle injury, but is back practicing and will probably play in the opener.
--DT John Henderson was listed as limited in practice with a shoulder injury, but teams no longer have to list players as probable or questionable until Friday. The Jaguars hadn't revealed he was injured except that he suffered a burner in the third preseason game. He'll probably play.
--DE Reggie Hayward, recovering from the torn Achilles he suffered last year, didn't practice but he's probably just being rested.
GAME PLAN
The Jaguars are going to run the kind of offense that Del Rio likes now that Byron Leftwich is gone. David Garrard isn't the long thrower that Leftwich was, but he throws better on the run and can throw short very well. So look for the Jaguars to play a conservative offense, stressing the running of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew while mixing in a few passes.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH
Jaguars RT Tony Pashos vs. Titans DRT Kyle Vanden Bosch. This is Pashos' first game as a Jaguar since signing as a free agent from Baltimore. Pashos struggled in the preseason and Vanden Bosch could prove to be a difficult test for him.
Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis vs. Titans WR Eric Moulds. Mathis made the Pro Bowl last year and he hopes to get this season off to a good start by shutting down Moulds, a veteran who appears to still have something left in the tank.
INJURY IMPACT
The ankle injury suffered by starting linebacker Clint Ingram is probably the only serious injury the team has going into the opener. Pat Thomas will likely start in his place.
--DE Reggie Hayward also didn't practice but he's probably being rested because of a torn Achilles he suffered last year and will likely play.
--DT John Henderson, who is listed as seeing limited participation with a shoulder injury, also will likely play but teams no longer have to list players as probable, questionable or doubtful until Friday.
--Two backup defensive linemen, Kenny Pettway (quad) and Tony McDaniel (knee), also didn't practice.
--Brad Meester is out for several weeks with a knee injury.
