Chiefs report: Inside slant
The bubbling volcano that is Larry Johnson was eruption-free for the better part of the past nine months.
But the lava flowed Sunday after the Chiefs' 37-7 loss to the San Diego Chargers. On his Twitter page after the game, Johnson took shots at head coach Todd Haley and his background. He noted Haley's lack of football-playing experience on the high school, college and pro level, and contrasted that to the background of his father, Larry Sr., who is the defensive line coach at Penn State.
"My father got more credentials than most of these pro coaches. Google my father!!!!!!!" Then a second tweet: "My father played for the coach from 'rememeber the titans.' Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn."
Before Johnson fired up his Twitter page, some of the frustration of a 1-6 season dribbled out in the Chiefs locker room as he spoke directly to the media.
"This is what this organization has been doing since I've been here; this is my third head coach in seven years," Johnson said. "It seems like this is what we keep doing, going back to the drawing board. We bring in new coaches, new organization, new schemes, new mentality, new attitude. I don't know where this is going."
The Chiefs have struggled to run the football in the '09 season, averaging 101.3 yards per game. Johnson has just 358 yards on 132 carries, a 2.7-yard per carry average and a per-game average of just 51 yards. Against San Diego, Johnson ran 16 times for 49 yards.
Add one catch for 7 yards, and Johnson had just 53 yards of offense. Those are not numbers that he expected coming into this season. Since the end of the 2008 season, the regime change at Arrowhead Stadium and the settling of his off-field court cases, Johnson has kept a quiet and low profile. He knew the only way he was going to get anywhere close to the $3 million-plus in his contract for the '09 season was to stay in Kansas City.
Johnson had to convince general manager Scott Pioli and Haley that he still had something to provide, even as he nears his 30th birthday next month.
But the losing and lack of production combined to light the fuse on Johnson's notoriously unhappy attitude.
Haley said only that the team is looking into the situation involving Johnson, not so much for his blast at the coach, but for several homophobic comments on his Twitter page and made to reporters on Monday.
But the head coach is quite comfortable with his background in football and coaching.
"No, I'm very proud of what I've done to get to where I am," Haley said. "I'm very proud of my results as a position coach and a coordinator. Right now, am I proud of my head coaching record? No. I will do everything I can to change that."
