Dolphins report: Notes, quotes
--CB Benny Sapp, acquired from Minnesota for WR Greg Camarillo, provides depth for the Dolphins' secondary.
"I think you get a guy that has some position flexibility. I think that he's played corner and started games at corner in this league," said coach Tony Sparano. "Played a large number of plays last season. Played in some playoff games and also plays inside in the nickel. So, I think he has a little bit of position flex (flexibility) that way and special teams player as well."
Sapp enters the mix behind starters Sean Smith and Vontae Davis along with Will Allen, Nolan Carroll and Kevin Hobbs. Allen has yet to return from Aug. 12 arthroscopic knee surgery.
--NT Randy Starks is getting more comfortable with his move inside, coach Tony Sparano said.
"I've seen in the last two weeks Randy become much more comfortable in there and much more disruptive," said Sparano. "He's starting to feel his way around some of the different block patterns that are coming at him, he gave us good rush in the game the other night and was disruptive during the course of the game. To get sacks from that position when most of the time that position is double teamed in protection, I think tells you a little bit about Randy.
"In the scheme of defense that we'll run, I think this guy's going to be a big factor in what it is that we do. At the end of this thing, he may not have as many tackles that he had a year ago, but he's going to set the table for a lot of other people, and that's really what I see happening. I see him out there unselfishly in a lot of situations, handling his business well enough to allow (Karlos) Dansby, (Tim) Dobbins, Channing (Crowder) to do the things that they do."
-- QB Pat White is likely playing for his roster spot. Coach Tony Sparano said he doesn't expect White to play in Friday's game against the Falcons. He's currently fourth on the QB depth chart behind Chad Henne, Chad Pennington and Tyler Thigpen.
--WR Brandon Marshall caused a stir early in the week when he dropped three more passes in Monday's practice and punted the last one after he picked it up off the ground. Marshall punted again after he caught a touchdown pass from Chad Henne on Tuesday morning, then watched in bemusement as second-year cornerback Vontae Davis picked up a ball intended for Marshall in the end zone that afternoon and punted it away. Said Marshall: "I didn't like it at all. I went back to the sideline and I told coach, 'I can't believe I let him get the opportunity to kick the ball.' ... It makes me mad."
--The Dolphins had to deal with a lightning delay of one hour and 45 minutes on Saturday, causing their game at Jacksonville to kick off at 9:15.
"One of the things we didn't do was feed them," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano joked. "I might try that again down the road. It was a situation for both teams. It really was. I just told the team, my hat's off to them because I think that shows a little bit of character in being able to do that.
"We had to heat 'em up and reheat 'em and then kind of cool 'em down three times, maybe even four times at one point. It was 15 minutes and then 20 minutes and then 15 minutes. You want to be ready to go when the ball drops. ... We had 'em going in the hallway out here, warming them up and position coaches got with them a bunch and tried to keep their attention. To the guys' credit, they stayed focused pretty good. I was pleased to see that."
QUOTE TO NOTE
--"Yeah, definitely healthy, definitely happy. The only thing is I'm hot. Add another 'H' to that, the three H's: happy, healthy, hot." -- Brandon Marshall describing how this preseason is different than the ones he spent in Denver.
