When Bill Sheridan was promoted from Giants' linebackers coach to become the team's defensive coordinator, he knew he was getting All-Pro defensive end Osi Umenyiora back from a season spent rehabilitating his injured knee.

What Sheridan couldn't have known was that the Giants intended to buy him a couple of other welcoming gifts, namely tackles Chris Canty (6-7, 295), who played both end and tackle in the 3-4 Dallas scheme, and Rocky Bernard, who is solely a tackle.

It wouldn't have been enough to keep Steve Spagnuolo from accepting the head coaching job in St. Louis, but it does set up a defense that could very well do for Sheridan what the Giants' unit did for Spagnuolo -- make him a winner in his first season as coordinator.

"I have to feel we have a very sound defense, maybe one of the best in the league," Sheridan said the other day. "Getting Osi back was a great thing, and signing the guys we signed during the UFA period was more than I could have hoped for."

What Sheridan plans to do is still a privileged secret, but knowing that he worked closely under Spagnuolo and shared the same helter-skelter style of intimidating pass rush, it is probably no secret that he will, in the words of his predecessor, "put the best 11 guys on the field," which in turn translates into putting the best seven front line and linebacker people on the field, too.

"We are a press defense," he said, "so when it's clearly pass rush time, they (the offense) will have to figure out who's coming, who's faking and who's staying back. It's a challenge for any offense, and even for the best of them it forces adjustments."

The quick release is one mode of compensation. The short drop that usually accompanies it is another. Sometimes a pump fake will result in handing the ball to a power back going up the middle. But whatever the case, the Giants will have a crew of outstanding players on the field.

It might involve Canty at end or Justin Tuck moving from end to tackle, or tackle Jay Alford going to outside to end. Or there may be other combinations in Sheridan's bag of tricks. Suffice to say that end Mathis Kiwanuka will spend some time at strong-side linebacker, too, or might just help to form a front four (or five) of quick, strong pass rushers.

In the end, it would be wrong to assume the offenses that come up against will this Giants' defensive unit will enjoy the experience even a little bit.

Not to make excuses but it is obvious that Eli's foot injury screwed him up over the losing streak.  Carlos Quentin of the White Sox missed months of his baseball season with that same injury.  Eli no longer is even getting treatment for the injury and look what happened.  This defense is terrible.  I have a milk carton in my hand and i see Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Canty, Sintim, and B ...(more)

Dear Giant Fans:      Let's try to be objective in evaluating game 10 against Atlanta, and let the dice fall where they lie.
Pluses:  1.  One win down and six to go.  2.  We beat one of our Wild Card tie teams.

He was beaten repeatedly by Mike Jenkins, and was totally lost on a few plays. Especially on 3rd and a mile in the first half by Jenkins for 25 yards and also on the td by Weems which made it 31-24. Sheridan is also to blame since he let him all day long on Jenkins while Thomas was watching their 3rd WR. No adjustements like usua ...(more)

Is there anyone else out there not all that excited about it ? Watching this team the past 5 week isn't the slightest amount of fun anymore. Can even the most optimistic of you on here tell me you think we have a chance of going anywhere even if we make the playoffs with that pathetic bunch of heartless, talentless, clowns known as our defense ? It's amazing the level of stench they've achieved. T ...(more)

Its the bye week and the players are all doing a bit of self scouting. Figured I'd do some also as a 50 year die hard fan.  I remember reading on one of those In-Flight-Sky Magazines last year, that in a poll of fans across America, whether they win or lose or even snatch a Super Bowl Victory here and there, the concensus was that the ...(more)

This is from the Friday's Bergen Record:

Running backs coach Gerald Ingram hinted last week that some of Jacobs' problems stemmed from plays called for him. He cited the departure of Derrick Ward via free agency and the early-season injury to his anticipated replacement, ...(more)

Word is that we may finally be seeing Barden this week. He's been getting extra reps. in practice and rumor has it we will finally see that fade. Things have gone bad recently but I think fortunes are about to change. Hopefully a nice rest has the boys fired up and ready to make a run. If we take care of business we control our own destiny. Feagles kick that fn ball with all your might. Go ...(more)

Man oh man, you know your D is struggling something awful when the third string RB can waltz into the end zone from more than five yards out.  Chase Blackburn is listed as the starting MLB with Pierce out, and joins a LB core that continues to frustrate us as fans this season.

This is our season. (In my opinion.) We are behing Dallas record wise, Philly head to head, and the Falcons Conference record wise... we lose this game it digs us a major hole.  Eli should play well, I hope they run Jacobs more, and get him ready for a second half surge.  Our defense better start to get to the QB.  With Turne ...(more)

I don't know about everyone else, but the fact Aaron Ross is finally making an appearance makes me happy.  I find him to be the Studly McStudpants of our secondary.  At least one of the strongest and smartest on the field!  If they can get pressure on ...(more)

I think ccs gone easily ...  rocky ?     I think dockerys gonna stay but he could be cut if our draft goes a certain way

Id like to see clark either benched or gone ( or retire )

also   Id say  that new rb needs to be cut at the end of the season or the rookie who never played ( sad but its the life of the nfl )

Has zero to do with the Giants.  But I would just like to discuss probably the most retarded play in the history of the NFL with my fellow Giants fans.  I'm sure most of you saw the events within the last few minutes...4th and 2...Bellichick went for it...Manning goes 30 yards and boom 35-34 last minute "upset" I guess y ...(more)
