Giants report: Notes, quotes

Inside slant · Notes, quotes · Strategy and personnel

--With C Shaun O'Hara's out for Sunday, the Giants, who have started six different offensive line combinations this season, will likely go back to the starting unit they first unveiled against Seattle on Nov. 7. That lineup saw Shawn Andrews at left tackle, David Diehl at left guard, Rich Seubert at center, Chris Snee at right guard, and Kareem McKenzie at right tackle.

Head coach Tom Coughlin added that they don't have any concerns about Andrews' back holding up for a full game if he's pressed into action. "I think this is kind of a routine we went through once before and built up, so he's had some build-up time, and hopefully if he does have that opportunity, he'll be able to go the whole game," Coughlin said.

--Although the Giants don't have control of their own destiny, that doesn't mean they've conceded the season as they go through their preparations this week for Washington.

"It's not difficult because if you play well, we end the season on a great note if we win," Brandon Jacobs said.

Jacobs was asked if simply winning against Washington would be a good enough ending compared to what the team might have had had it won its last two games.

"No, it's not a great ending, but unlike last year, we not only didn't go to the playoffs, we got killed in the last two games of the season," he said. "That left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths -- even worse than not going to the playoffs, so you can't go in and play bad just because you're not going to the playoffs.

"You still have to go in and work hard and end on a good note," he added. "That's why we have practice, and are working hard and preparing hard for the Redskins, who are a good team. We want to end the season on a win, regardless."

--The Giants will be sending four players to the Pro Bowl: right guard Chris Snee, center Shaun O'Hara, safety Antrel Rolle and defensive end Justin Tuck.

Snee, who will be making his third consecutive appearance, was chosen as the only starter of the four.

O'Hara, who also was voted to his third consecutive Pro Bowl, received a boost thanks to the fan voting, which he won at his position. The Giants center has played in just six games this season due to a variety of foot problems, and he will miss the regular-season finale after his Achilles issue flared up in last week's game against the Packers.

Tuck, who was voted in for the second time in his career, leads the Giants with 11.0 sacks and a league-leading five fumble recoveries.

Rolle, who also led the fan voting at his position, will be making his second Pro Bowl appearance and his first as a member of the Giants.

The Giants also have half-dozen players who were chosen to be alternates. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive end Osi Umenyiora were chosen as second alternates. Quarterback Eli Manning and receiver Hakeem Nicks were chosen as third alternates.

Left tackle David Diehl, who played in last year's Pro Bowl, was voted in this year as a fourth alternate, and defensive tackle Barry Cofield, who's been having his best season as a pro, was chosen as a fifth alternate.

Each player on the winning Pro Bowl team receives $45,000 for his participation in the game; each player on the losing team receives $22,500.

--Speaking of the Pro Bowl, Rich Seubert, who filled in for Shaun O'Hara at center while O'Hara was sidelined for most of the season, said that both O'Hara and Chris Snee offered to finance a trip for Seubert and his family to Hawaii. However, Seubert declined because his wife, Jodi, will be seven months pregnant in February.

--Defensive tackle Barry Cofield was selected as the 10th annual winner of the "George Young Good Guy Award," given to a player who consistently provides the members of the media with outstanding cooperation on a daily basis.

Cofield just narrowly edged out Rich Seubert (second place), Deon Grant (third place), Matt Dodge (fourth place), and Keith Bulluck (fifth place).

Previous winners still with the team include Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka and Eli Manning.

In lieu of awarding a trophy, the Giants' chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America will make a donation in Cofield's name to the charity of his choice.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's quite a turnaround going from playing for the No. 2 (playoff) seed ... to not even controlling our destiny." -- Special teams captain Chase Blackburn, when asked about the stakes of this week's regular-season finale against Washington.
