Giants report: Strategy and personnel
NEEDS/DRAFT PRIORITIES
1. Wide receiver. Given that starter Ike Hilliard won't be back, and that the reserves are young and fast but can't seem to stay healthy, the Giants might look into this area in the draft. On the other hand, they have -- or will have -- the money to sign one of the UFA wideouts available, perhaps Pittsburgh's Plaxico Burress.
2. Secondary. CB Will Allen has been a disappointing first round pick (2001). SS Gibril Wilson was a phenom as a fifth-round pick last year, but suffered a season-ending neck injury in the ninth week. Veteran (11 years) Brent Alexander is only adequate. Former first rounder (1997) Shaun Williams has been a disappointment. Only CB Will Peterson, who is not without warts, has been reliable. It could be here that the Giants surprise the NFL with their second-round selection.
3. Defensive line. The addition of MLB Antonio Pierce was a boon to the linebacking corps, but he will find life difficult unless the Giants are able to improve the line in front of him. Outside of DE Michael Strahan, there isn't an true impact player among the front four.
