Eric Mangini was working out on the treadmill when he saw footage of Ohio State sack specialist Vernon Gholston.

"I remember thinking this could be the sixth pick in the draft," the Jets' coach said.

It was appropriate that Mangini was on the treadmill, because he and the Jets hope that Gholston, the sixth overall pick, can invigorate a pass rush that seemed to be running in place much of last season.

The Jets finished 25th in the NFL with 29 sacks in 2007, and have brought in both Gholston and Arizona free agent linebacker Calvin Pace to improve those numbers.

"I liked the way he was able to set the edge," Mangini said of watching Gholston, who played end in college and will be a linebacker in the Jets' 3-4 defense. "I liked the way he affected the quarterback."

And not just with Gholston's 14 sacks in 2007 as a junior. He skipped his senior season to turn pro.

Mangini also noted the times that Gholston was "driving the tackle back into (the quarterback) or getting a hand on him and altering the throw."

Some experts have questioned Gholston's effort in college, saying he would disappear during plays, or even entire games. Some have labeled him a potential bust.

"I don't worry about it too much," the 6-3 1/2, 264-pounder said of the criticism. "I don't get into that. I do what I can do and control what I can control. The biggest thing I'll do is to work hard, keep grinding away and hopefully I'll show them up."

That was about as much bravado as the calm, collected Gholston demonstrated on his first day of rookie minicamp. He even said that his goal was "just to make the team at this point. I'm a rookie and some will say I was the first (Jets') pick, but you still have to put your work in."

His biggest challenge will be making the transition from the Buckeyes' 4-3, in which Gholston usually was a down lineman and not a standup linebacker. He's not worried.

"I stood on my feet sometimes and that's what I'm doing here," said Gholston, who sidestepped questions about contract negotiations. "It's helped me adjust to" playing linebacker.

"It's going to be a learning curve, but that's what I liked about the things that he did at Ohio State," said Mangini, noting that Gholston sometimes dropped into coverage at Ohio State.

"It's not a complete projection," the coach added, "because we've seen those things on tape."

Here's my take...

Sanchez: B- Shows signs of being a very good QB. He's mobile, has a good arm and excellent football instincts. He's also bright. However, at times looks lost and like a QB with only 15 college starts behind him. The remainder of the season is very important for his development.

I'm not sure about anyone else but I'm not opposed to drafting a big OT to replace Woody.  If Duke Robinson or Ciron Black are available with our pick we need to take one of them.  Woody is breaking down a little bit and we have no depth.  Actually I'm not so sure we will resign D'Brick and Mangold.  Hopefull ...(more)

This was the week we should have been adding more offense for Sanchez.  Unfortunately our great O-Coordinator decided to do it way too early and we ended up 4-4.  Hopefully we get a streak going starting with Jacksonville.  I stand by our O-Line put the game on them and pound the ball.

I have heard a lot of very strange things this year regarding the Jets, but today took the biscuit: people questioning Mark Sanchez and hypothesising that we would be just as good with Clemens and questioning whether Rex is the right guy to lead this team, a massive eig ...(more)

4-4 12 TD's 7 INT's.  Sanchez 4-4 11TD's 10 INT's.  And half those INT's came in 1 game.  Yeah his arm is so much bigger and stronger he's so much better then Sanchez yet he has the same record and 1 more TD.  GO JOE!  Oh by the way guys Sanchez is a rookie right?

Ok folks, we have no game this week and actually that is a blessing to my stomach lining.

So what areas should Rex be working over to finish this season on a positive note?

I would think special teams will get some tinkering, and Id really like someone to teach Weatherford some tricks of punting deep. The guys average is 41.5 yards per punt and thats 26th in the league.

Well since we have no game to talk about this week I'll give you guys some of my early thoughts on it.  I think we definately need to upgrade at WR and CB.  I believe Lito is due a 4 mil roster bonus which I highly doubt Mr. T is paying him.  I think he took a chance on Lito if we made a run this year.  Definately worth the 4th round risk.  There are a couple CB's in this ...(more)

Rationalize the loss however you want, but in the end...it's still a loss.  Typical Jets fans, coach and players included, can't even accept that the game was lost - trying to justify somehow that you should have won.  Football is played in 3 phases of the game.  We didn't just beat you in special teams, we beat you ...(more)

It wasn't long ago that most on this board praised Eric Mangini.

Now a year later they are screaming for his removal in Cleveland.

Yes you all know who you are. The same unrealistic Jet fans who of course knew better than I that Mangini was going to become the reincarnation of Bill Belichik.

Now you are all saying that rookies are allowed to make mistakes

Might I interject a few thoughts here gentlemen:

!: We, AKA Jets, are even at the half,,that's been our MO so far.
2: We, AKA JETS, have not been "DOMINATED" and won't be!
3: We, AKA Jets only have two games in the next eight that are competitive,
The Pats and

This was a great win for the Jets. I know it was against the lowly Raiders but you have to understand this was a Raiders team that just beat the Eagles. They saw how poorly Sanchez played last week and they saw how well we ran ...(more)

(POLL)  Ok, let me start off by saying I have never liked this guy.  This is not a knee-jerk reaction, this is a few years of horrible play calling in my opinion.  Without stating my reasoining or opinion, let me ask you the question first.

Do you pass on play calling duties?

I figured we could have a place to shoot the bull about whatevers on our mind at the moment if its Jets related or not, kind of a gathering spot thread like the season long thread was before. It seems like the place could use a little "community feel" again like our own little bar and grill during slack times. This c ...(more)
