--Quarterback Alex Smith talked with reporters for Comcast Sports Net Bay Area and the Sacramento Bee, and while he didn't want to be directly quoted, Smith said he will probably re-sign with the team when the lockout ends. Smith has been working out with teammates.

Smith noted that the playbook given to him by coach Jim Harbaugh is similar to what it was in 2005 when he was a rookie. The offensive coordinator then was Mike McCarthy, now the head coach of the Packers.

--The 49ers made changes in their front office with the promotion of head trainer Jeff Ferguson to director of football operations and Sports Medicine. In addition, executive vice president of football administration Lal Heneghan has departed.

Heneghan was with the organization for five years and his departure was part of the team's plan to "restructure and reorganize duties."

Ferguson has been with the club since 2006, and in his duties he will oversee the 49ers' strength and conditioning, team logistics, equipment and video operations departments.

--During the time when NFL players could be at their team facilities, work out and get playbooks, quarterback Alex Smith was given a playbook by coach Jim Harbaugh even though is a free agent.

Said Harbaugh, "Well, Alex is going to definitely have the head start. He has played in the National Football League. He's won games in the National Football League. So if I'm a betting man, I'm betting on Alex Smith."

As for Smith getting a playbook when he's not signed, Harbaugh said, "There's some trust there. There's faith there. I strongly feel Alex that is going to be back here, so I gave him the playbook."

--Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who was selected in the second round when the 49ers traded up with Denver, said he plans to get some tutoring from Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck if the lockout continues.

Luck's coach has been Jim Harbaugh, who is now the 49ers' head coach, and Kaepernick figures it will help because the offenses are the same.

Kaepernick is getting ready to move to the San Francisco area, so he will be close to both the team headquarters and Stanford. He said he met Luck last year at the Manning Passing Academy, and hopes to talk to him as much as possible.

"Especially if the lockout stays on," Kaepernick said. "I'm going to try and pick his brain as much as I can and try to get a jump-start into this offense, and pick up as much as I can from him."

As for eventually being coached by Harbaugh, Kaepernick was worked out by him before the draft.

"He was one coach that was very hands-on," Kaepernick said. "He was very energetic with everything that he was doing. He's the type of coach that gets you just excited to play the game."

As for being the sixth quarterback selected in the draft, he said, "It's definitely disappointing seeing other quarterbacks go before you, but once again, I've kind of fallen into a perfect situation. I have a great coach, great teammates that are going to be there on offense, so it's just exciting for me."

--The biggest conversion will be made by seventh-round pick Bruce Miller of Central Florida. Miller recorded 35.5 sacks in 52 games at defensive end but the 49ers want him to play fullback. Miller, who is 6-1, 248 pounds, said some teams were looking at him as an outside linebacker, but only the 49ers saw him as a fullback. "I am kind of shocked," Miller said. "It was kind of hard for me to believe that I was going to have a chance to play linebacker. That was a little bit more realistic than fullback."

--"Trent Baalke was a steely-eyed missile man in this draft. It was impressive. Some of the things that happened in this draft, a lot of people would have buckled." - Harbaugh on general manager Trent Baalke, who was running only his second draft.
