Abram Elam News The New York Jets selected QB Mark Sanchez with the fifth pick of the NFL draft after trading with the Cleveland Browns. The former USC star with the powerful arm gives the Jets a franchise QB after Brett Favre came out of retirement for one season. The pick was the first for new coach Rex Ryan, who will have Sanchez compete with Kellen Clemens for the starting job. Sanchez threw for 3,965 yards and 41 touchdowns in 16 starts with the Trojans, but the Jets were confident in selecting him despite his lack of experience. The Jets acquired the pick from Cleveland and former coach Eric Mangini for their first-round pick, No. 17 overall, their second-round pick this year, and DE Kenyon Coleman, DB Abram Elam and QB Brett Ratliff. He led the NFL last season with 188 stops. Rookies David Veikune and Kaluka Maiava are listed as backups behind Jackson and Eric Barton. Neither of the first-year players has a tackle this season. C.J. Mosley News -In an attempt to shore up their defensive line, the Cleveland Browns have signed a player familiar to new coach Eric Mangini. Defensive lineman C.J. Mosley signed with the Browns on Friday. He spent the past three seasons with the New York Jets, where he played for Mangini, formerly the head coach, along with several of Mangini's assistants who are also now with the Browns. Mosley entered the league as a sixth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2005 after playing in his home state at the University of Missouri. Mosley was traded to the Jets during training camp in 2006 and played 35 games over the past three seasons for New York, making three starts and recording five sacks. Eric Steinbach No Updates D'Qwell Jackson News Cleveland Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson has undergone surgery in New York to repair his injured shoulder. Jackson's agent, Brian Mackler, said the Browns' leading tackler, is expected to make a full recovery in 12 weeks. The operation took place at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and was performed by Dr. Frank Cordasco. Jackson got hurt defending a pass in the first half of Sunday's 27-14 loss at Pittsburgh. The Browns placed him on injured reserve Tuesday. Coach Eric Mangini said Jackson intends to remain involved with the team. "D'Qwell's such a good guy. Even though he's not playing the field, he'll be very active in meetings," Mangini said. "He'll work with the young guys. He'll work with whoever. That's who he is." Injury Shoulder - IR. Mike Adams News The Cleveland Browns signed safety Mike Adams on Friday, the same day the club lost Sean Jones to free agency. Adams started five games for Cleveland last season and also was a free agent. Adams joined the league in 2004 as an undrafted free agent with San Francisco. He made 42 tackles and two interceptions last year, and also played on special teams. Browns general manager George Kokinis said Adams "possesses the characteristics we believe in" and praised his versatility. Alex Mack No Updates Blake Costanzo News The Cleveland Browns were awarded linebacker Blake Costanza from the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. Costanza played in all 16 games on Buffalo's special teams last season and led the club with 26 tackles and forced two fumbles. An undrafted free agent who signed with the New York Jets in 2006, the 25-year-old spent a portion of the 2007 season on Buffalo's practice squad and played special teams in the Bills' final three games that season. He was a three-year starter at Lafayette. Ryan Pontbriand News Long snapper Ryan Pontbriand was added to the AFC squad on Monday, giving the Cleveland Browns at least four representatives for next month's game in Hawaii. Pontbriand will join kick returner Joshua Cribbs, wide receiver Braylon Edwards and left tackle Joe Thomas in Honolulu for the Feb. 10 game. Before this season, the Browns hadn't had a player make the Pro Bowl since linebacker Jamir Miller in 2001. Pontbriand was not a replacement. He was chosen by San Diego's coaching staff, which as the losing team in the AFC championship, gets to coach the AFC team. "I'm thrilled," Pontbriand said. "Making the Pro Bowl is a goal I was always hoping for but never thought I'd see this early in my career. It's going to be a memorable experience." James Davis News Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini said he's cooperating with the NFL in its investigation into rookie running back James Davis' mysterious season-ending shoulder injury. On Sunday, ESPN.com reported that Davis was injured during a recent post-practice period for extra work when he was hit by a Browns linebacker. According to the report, witnesses said Davis was not wearing shoulder pads while the unidentified defender who hit him had them on. League spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is aware of the alleged incident and has been looking into the matter. "The review is ongoing," Aiello said in an e-mail response to The Associated Press. Mangini confirmed Monday that he has had discussions with the league, and said that following his own research that he's "comfortable with where we are on it." "I like James Davis a lot," Mangini said. "The last thing we want to do is ever put him in a position or anybody in a position where they could get hurt. I've talked to a lot of people involved in it and we're going to continue to work with the league on it." Mangini did not deny the report, but repeated several times that he has been in touch with the league. Injury Shoulder - IR. Out for the season Jamal Lewis News Browns RB Jamal Lewis said Wednesday that he hasn't changed his mind about retiring after this season, his 10th in the NFL. Lewis announced the decision following the Browns' 30-6 loss Sunday in Chicago, leading to speculation he was speaking from emotion. Lewis is disappointed with the Browns' continuous slide, but said the team's performance through eight gams had no bearing on his decision to retire. "They didn't sour me," he said of the losses. "I just expected better. I expected more. I expected to win. I was excited to start off the season with the attitude Mangini and his staff instilled in us. At the same time, when you work as hard as we did you want to see results. I'm still looking for them." "Nick joined us midseason last year and did an excellent job on special teams and also provided veteran leadership," Browns general manager Phil Savage said. "He will be a part of our core special teams unit and serve as a quality backup safety." An eight-year veteran, Sorensen has also played for St. Louis and Jacksonville. Poteat, an unrestricted free agent, had two interceptions, a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery last season for the New York Jets. A favorite of new Browns coach Eric Mangini, Poteat spent the last three seasons with the Jets. All four of his career interceptions have come in the last two seasons. The 31-year-old Poteat was a third-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2000 and played three seasons there. He has also played with Tampa Bay and New England Jerome Harrison News Cleveland RB Jerome Harrison did not have too productive of a game on Sunday in a Week 8 loss to Chicago. Ryan Tucker No Updates Floyd Womack No Updates Pat Murray No Updates Donte' Stallworth News NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decided Donte' Stallworth's football punishment should last much longer than his 24 days in jail. The Cleveland Browns receiver, who pleaded guilty to killing a pedestrian while driving drunk, was suspended without pay Thursday for the entire season. He is barred from team activities until he is reinstated after the Super Bowl. "Your conduct endangered yourself and others, leading to the death of an innocent man," Goodell wrote in a letter to Stallworth released by the league. "The NFL and NFL players must live with the stain that you have placed on their reputations." Stallworth struck 59-year-old crane operator Mario Reyes the morning of March 14 in Miami. He pleaded guilty June 16 to DUI manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and was suspended indefinitely by Goodell two days later. "Regardless of the length of my suspension, I will carry the burden of Mr. Reyes' death for the rest of my life," Stallworth said in a statement. "I urge NFL fans not to judge NFL players or me based on my tragic lapse in judgment. I am a good person who did a bad thing. I will use the period of my suspension to reflect, fulfill my obligations, and use this experience to make a positive impact on the lives of those who look up to NFL players." Injury Suspension - Suspended for regular season. Will be reinstated for 2010 season Marcus Benard News One day after cutting deep into his roster, Browns coach Eric Mangini did some more grooming. The Browns were awarded defensive back Marquis Floyd from Seattle, running back Cedric Peerman from Baltimore, defensive back DeAngelo Smith from Dallas and offensive lineman Phil Trautwein from St. Louis. To make room for the quartet, Mangini waived linebacker Marcus Benard, offensive lineman Corey Hilliard and defensive back Bret Lockett. |
