The Chargers cut a number of players Saturday to get down to the 53-man roster limit. Released were: LB Eric Bakhtiari, WR Gary Banks, LB Darry Beckwith, CB Simeon Castille, DE Andre Coleman, TE Charles Davis, DE Keith Grennan, LB James Holt, DT Rashaad Jackson, FB Billy Latsko, WR Charly Martin, RB Kestahn Moore, DT Ian Scott, CB Antonio Smith and TE Kory Sperry.

Dolphins DB Will Allen (seven tackles), DB Yeremiah Bell (seven tackles), DE Kendall Langford (four tackles, sack) and DE Phillip Merling (two tackles, fumble recovery) all chipped in as Miami fell in Week 3 to San Diego.

The Miami Dolphins activated linebacker Matt Roth from the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list and released tight end John Nalbone. Roth was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list on September 5, 2009 and has missed the first six games of the 2009 season.

The Jets have waived linebacker Craig Kobel, safety Nate Ness, quarterback Chris Pizzotti and wide receiver Huey Whittaker. Kobel played in the Arena Football League last year. Ness was an undrafted free agent who had 107 tackles and seven interceptions in two seasons as a starter at Arizona. Pizzotti was an undrafted free agent who was a two-time All-Ivy League quarterback at Harvard. Whittaker spent parts of the last three seasons in the AFL.

Chad Pennington's shoulder surgery was less extensive than feared, and the Miami Dolphins quarterback should be able to play next season if he so chooses, a person familiar with the results of the operation told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person didn't want to be identified because the Dolphins haven't released any information about the surgery. The person said the arthroscopic procedure was encouraging because there was no damage to the rotator cuff, and Pennington should be able to start throwing in eight to 12 weeks.

Shoulder - IR. Out for the season

Dolphins QB Pat White made a nice impact in a Week 10 loss to the Patriots, rushing six times for 45 yards. His one pass attempt fell incomplete.

Dolphins K Dan Carpenter kicked a career-long 52-yard field goal and two extra points in a Week 9 loss to the Patriots.

Miami Dolphins LB Joey Porter sat out practice for the second day in a row Thursday because of a sore hamstring, and he could miss a game for only the seventh time in his 11-year career. Porter did light exercises on the side while the team practiced. Coach Tony Sparano said Porter's hamstring is improving, but it's uncertain whether he'll play Sunday against Buffalo. "He's going to want to play," Sparano said. "I always give him the benefit of the doubt." Porter was also bothered by the injury last week and unable to finish Sunday's game at San Diego, although he played well and had a sack. "We got a bunch of good plays out of Joey," Sparano said. "Joey is that way. He's never going to want to miss a game." Porter last missed a game in 2006. He would likely be replaced by Charlie Anderson, who has six career starts.

Allen has missed only one game since joining the Dolphins in 2006. He leads the team with two interceptions this year.
