Giants WR Mario Manningham returned to action in Week 9 against the Chargers after missing one game with a shoulder injury. He totaled six catches for 52 yards. Manningham was targeted six times and had a long reception of 16 yards. He doesn't have a touchdown in his last two games.

Notable inactives for the Giants-Vikings Week 17 game include: Giants RB Brandon Jacobs, DB Aaron Ross, K Lawrence Tynes, LB Gerris Wilkinson, DL Leger Douzable, WR Derek Hagan, TE Kevin Boss and DL Barry Cofield. The Cleveland Browns signed RB Chris Barclay, TE Jonny Harline, DB Tim Mixon, DL Chase Pittman, DL Melila Purcell, WR Steve Sanders and WR Syndric Steptoe to the practice squad Monday. Six of the eight players (Barclay, Louis, Pittman, Purcell, Sanders and Steptoe) were with the Browns during training camp, including three 2007 draft choices (Purcell, Pittman and Steptoe). Harline is an undrafted rookie free agent out of Brigham Young who spent training camp with the Indianapolis Colts. Mixon is an undrafted rookie free agent out of California who spent training camp with the Chicago Bears.

Giants RB Madison Hedgecock, TE Travis Beckum, WR Derek Hagan and QB David Carr all dressed but failed to record an offensive stat in Week 9 against the Chargers.

Corey Webster, who has developed into one the NFL's top cornerbacks over the past year, signed a five-year, $43 million contract extension with the Giants on Monday. Webster will receiver $20 million in guaranteed money under the deal that runs through 2013. The fourth-year player would have been a free agent at the end of the season. Webster was the Giants' second-round draft choice in 2005, the 43rd overall selection. After being benched early in the year, he moved into the starting lineup for the playoffs when Sam Madison suffered a sports hernia. Webster set up the Giants' overtime victory in the NFC title game when he intercepted Brett Favre in Green Bay. In the Super Bowl, he helped limit Randy Moss to five catches. "He really came into his own the latter part of last year, and that has carried over into the 2008 season, where he has shown that he is one of the top corners in the league," Reese said Sunday evening.

Giants weakside LB Michael Boley and DT Chris Canty returned to the lineup in Week 9 against the Chargers. Boley missed a month after knee surgery. Canty was out since the opening week with a calf injury. Boley finished the game with seven solo tackles and Canty didn't stat.

The Giants put DL Jay Alford on injured reserve Saturday after he underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Knee - IR. Out for the season

New York Giants safety Kenny Phillips has had microfracture surgery on his left knee and will have to wait about five months before he can start to run. Phillips, who was placed on injured reserve last week with patellofemoral arthritis, had the surgery on Tuesday. "I know that the doctors felt good about it," coach Tom Coughlin said Thursday. "So we are very, very hopeful and optimistic." Phillips said on his Web site that Dr. James Andrew performed the surgery in Alabama. "I'm going to make a speedy recovery, and I'll be back better than ever next year," he said.

Knee - IR. Out for the season.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Monday cornerbacks Aaron Ross and Kevin Dockery, out the first three games with hamstring injuries, are expected to practice this week. They could play in Week 4 at Kansas City.

Hip

Five years after being traded away in a draft-day swap for Eli Manning, Philip Rivers came back and stuck it to the New York Giants. Rivers capped an 80-yard drive with an 18-yard pass to Vincent Jackson with 21 seconds to play and the San Diego Chargers stunned the Giants 21-20 in Week 9, posting their third straight win while handing New York its fourth straight loss. "We had a chance and you can't leave that team in the game," said Manning, who was 25 of 33 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. "You can't leave that team an opening. They are good and talented and if you have a chance to end it, you have to end it." Manning didn't throw an interception while hooking up with Steve Smith on a 6-yard score in the second quarter and then with Kevin Boss for a 8-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Giants DB Terrell Thomas totaled nine tackles (seven solo) and one interception during a Week 9 loss to the Chargers. He has three interceptions on the season and two in his last three games.

The Giants decided Friday to insert Aaron Rouse into the starting lineup at safety for Sunday's game against the Chargers. Rouse will replace beleaguered veteran C.C. Brown, who has been beaten twice on deep passes for touchdowns during the losing streak. In making the switch, coach Tom Coughlin said Rouse plays the ball better in the air than Brown, so he will be paired with Michael Johnson. "We have three guys, they all play a lot," Coughlin said. "The third safety played 26 snaps the other day. So we are just going to try to maneuver around a little bit and defend the deep ball better, that's all."

Giants LB Antonio Pierce (ankle) was activated in Week 8 at Philadelphia, as expected. He had been listed as probable on the injury report with an ankle injury.

Rookie halfback Andre Brown has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Giants. The fourth-round draft pick from North Carolina State ruptured his Achilles' tendon in training camp, and he was among three roster moves on Tuesday as the Giants reduced their roster to 74 players. Brown recently had surgery to repair the tendon.

The Indianapolis Colts have released four players and still must make one more roster move to get down to the NFL's mandatory limit of 75. Defensive back Michael Coe, a fifth-round draft pick in 2007, defensive end Rudolph Hardie and defensive end Curtis Johnson were all placed on the waived-injured list late Monday afternoon. Undrafted rookie tight end Colin Cloherty was waived. The Colts must reach the cutdown limit on Tuesday.

Giants K Lawrence Tynes made a crucial mistake during a Week 9 loss to the Chargers, although it will never show up in the stat sheet. A bizarre play at the end of the Giants' opening drive cost them 3 points. New York lined up for a 39-yard field goal attempt, but Tynes never got the kick off. Jeff Feagles took the snap and Tynes said Feagles had both hands on the ball so he could not kick it. Tynes wasn't credited with a miss kick. He did convert on two fourth-quarter field goals (22, 38) and also made two extra points in the game.

Defensive tackle Rocky Bernard passed his physical and was taken off the non-football injury list by the New York Giants on Wednesday. Bernard, who signed a four-year, $16 million contract as a free agent in the offseason, hurt his hamstring while working out on his own after the Giants' minicamp. "It was good to have (him) out there," coach Tom Coughlin said of Bernard, who worked on a limited basis. "You know, he said he felt pretty good, too."

The Sports Xchange reports that LB Zak DeOssie (back) will not be able to participate in two-a-days until he receives approval from the medical staff.

Backup New York Giants linebacker Gerris Wilkinson will be sidelined up to two months following surgery to repair a dislocated right wrist. The surgery was performed on Monday by Dr. Robert Hotchkiss at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Wilkinson was hurt in the second half of the Giants' 21-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
